Spear fishing Club tourny STT
EMAIL US AT: VIspearfishing@gmail.com
Starting Dec 12th we will have a lot of daily trips to go fishing until January 8th (when school starts back up for me).
Does anyone want to start a spearfishing email list, club, tournament schedule.
Tournaments could be held and the entry fees could provide prizes for cool spearguns, fins, gear, etc that people could donate or purchase with the funds raised.
Email lists could send out emails to gather a group to, arrange boats, pay for gas, down the road boat repairs, maintenance, and provide fishermen with buddies for "safety in numbers."
I know a pro fishermen, who have experience in setting up tournaments (rules, areas, etc) that lives on island.
We have been wanting to get back into using lures to bring marlin and other fish up and going for blue water fish.
As a group we could set up training days to teach things like:
How to fish as a group with float lines, boats, and sharks around.
How to behave around sharks,
e.g. where to put your fish, how to keep fish when a shark or barracuda is going to snag it on the way up, aggressive behaviors and what you should do, etc
How to go deep, apnea training, etc, black outs
How to rig for big fish
How to fish without destroying a population
What to eat, and what not to eat (ciguatera poinson)
How to not loose your equipment to big fish
How to make your own power bands, rig your gun with new mono,
Lobster
How to make a float, float line,
How to fillet fish
trade equipment,
Test others' equipment before a purchase
Fund raisers for Trips to contests in Mexico, FL, etc with minimal effort 🙂 e.g. "10% of a nights sales go to the club" from your favorite place to boost their sales.
ultimately learn how to be a sustainable and safe pro spear fisherman who can get the big, easy, non-toxic dinner.

hope you like the ideas we've had so far.
cheers,

I was always under the impression that lobster could not be taken by spearfishing -- does anyone know if this is true??
Exit Zero, according to this, it is.

I don't think he meant shooting the lobster with the gun. More like teaching how to find them and snare them legally. Looking for eggs and such.
It would be exactly the type of thing we would discuss.
Ashultz has got it correct - Boy I have noticed quite a few are easy to discourage a lot of things on this list and jump on the the subject given their lack of knowledge and assuming we would be devastating the environment. FYI it's usually the other way around with the people/fishermen who are actually involved and "around" the environments. We will be working/ discussing and helping pass legislation and rules with the new "government to residents law and rules creating department out of UVI" (forgot the name) who is working on creating and maintaining areas, types of fish, etc in order to be able to continue fishing with health populations and getting things back to how they should be and watching mass commercialization fishing of the area.
FYI - The main issue is runoff onto the reefs from construction, thus destroying reefs and creatures. most of the reefs have died in the last 10 years here with lower than 25% left.
Sounds like a great way to meet people & learn about fishing & the enviroment...............too bad it's only in STT.
I've yet to try fishing here (STX)..............but looks fun & would love to eat fresh!
Good Luck with this idea 😀
What there ought to be is a monthly tournament called "Kill De LionFish" with cash prizes.
