I have heard that there are free vouchers for this. Does anyone know how you get them in St. Croix?

The local vets and the animal shelter will be able to let you know of various programs avilable along with information on the frequent "no cost/low cost spay/neuter" events which are held quite frequently.

Basically how it works is that you go to the Animal Shelter for the voucher, and then you take that voucher to one of the vets. Pretty much all the vets on island honor the vouchers. Basically, the vet gets paid from the Animal shelter when they turn the voucher back in to them. When we used this program, they were charging $25 or something very minimal. It's a great program and more people need to use it. We have too many stray pups around. 🙁

However, this program was designed to allow people who could not afford to get their animal spayed/neutered. The Animal Shelter is under tremendous financial burden. If you can afford it, please pay the Vet directly. If you cannot afford it, please reconsider keeping a pet. Too many people do not get their animals heartworm, lepto, flea & tick, and other meds/vaccines. We are doing all we can at the Shelter....but we need help.

Amen Beeski!

I thought it was for financially burdened families, who needed help to spay/neuter their pet, which is the responsible thing to do.

Does the shelter ask for proof of income to get your pet fixed? If not, they should! And they should have income guidelines to go by, so people with money don't take advantage of the program.

It is expensive owing a pet in the states and even more so here in the VI, so before moving here with pets or contemplating on adopting a pet, check into your finances to see if you can really afford a pet with all the expenses that goes with owning one: spay/neuter, medicine, vaccines, flea/tick control, food, toys, vet visits, etc.

Jost, why didn't you spay your dog in the states, where it probably was cheaper, before you moved to Stx?

For someone who just moved down here with a dog, exotic bird, and family, one can surely afford to fix their dog WITHOUT free or reduced cost vouchers and instead use one's own money/income.

The Humane Society of STT relies on their privately-donated Brinkerhoff Foundation to cover low cost spay/neuter and, yes, there is a proof of income requirement to qualify. When adopting a shelter animal, the cost of (compulsory) spay/neuter is included in the adoption fee.

I'm glad there are income requirements for low cost/free spaying/neutering. I wouldn't want to see anybody taking advantage a program that depends on donations.

If I find out my donations are going to pet owners who can afford on their own income to spay/neuter their pet, I would be highly upset!

when i had our stray we found spayed a few years ago there was a program (forget the name of it) that was offered. they did it for free but the donation i gave to the organization equaled what a vets spay would cost. yes i agree that some just used the program and did not give back.
but if those who really cant afford it are getting their pets taken care of then hopefully the poor dogs and cats are the ones that benefit.
