Spanish teachers
Does anyone know the procedure for applying for Spanish teaching positions?
Is it more "who you know" instead of "what you know"? (like it can be in th states)
I'm open for suggestions- let me have it!
THANKS A BUNCH
Here is the website for the local Department of Education: http://www.teachusvi.net/ (Thanks SuzanneB!) I think it's more what you know...like teaching Spanish! 😉
Thanks for the tip from Paradise (it's about 32 degrees here in PA or would that be zero to you?)
Good luck to you Christie. If you would like to get your foot in the door here at Charlotte Amalie High School, you can email Principal Jeanette Smith with your resume, refs, etc. Her email address is: jsmith1@sttj.k12.vi
Take a look at our excellent website if you get a chance---www.cahsvi.com (You know the webmaster is allowed bragging rights, right? 🙂
Ultimately the hiring decision will be done by the Dept. of Human Resources. When I applied from CT, I had a round-table phone interview, where many principals (from all 3 islands) and DOE staff were involved. After the interview the principals discussed which school had the greatest need for my expertise. I didn't even know until early August which island I was moving to, which school or subject I'd be teaching (Bachelor's in English and Education, Master's in Instructional Technology).
SuzanneB
that's encouraging
thanks
I'd like to pick your brain if I may
teaching is a second career for me (I have a background in sales- I'm 40 yrs. old)
I still need one or two more classes plus student teaching to become certified
here comes the picking-
would it be feasible to take the remaining courses at USVI U and student teach through them?
at the very least, transfering to the USVIU to student teach could make sense (coming up with 20K for the teaching semester here will bury me)
What do you think about all this?
I guess my biggest question is, how will you financially survive down here while paying for and taking classes at UVI? Especially when you student teach, that is a full-time commitment-working 8-3 in a classroom without pay and to top it off YOU get to pay UVI for the privilege of student teaching! Do you already have a Bachelor's Degree in another area? They may be able to offer you an alternative route to certification w/o the student teaching. Let me know and I'll do a little research.
SuzanneB,
Thank you for your interest. I have a BS in International Business, a BS in Spanish, and a minor in Economics, plus international study and internship in Mexico. (if that counts for anything)
As far as paying for more classes and student teaching, my plan is to call my broker for a check and hope I'm not eating cat food during my retirement. Having a weekend job doing "whatever" will help take the edge off.
Besides, I grew up poor, have been poor before (actually-broke after my divorce) I can take being broke-I might even loose a few pounds.
In any event, to get out of sales and into teaching I have to bite the bullet and pay some university somewhere the money to student teach. If you can find any info on my behalf you would be a tremendous help.
One more thing- If I finish all this in Pa., I may transfer from my expensive private university to an out of town cheaper state school for the student teaching,
There was an ad in the VI Daily News today for a part-time Spanish teacher for Elementary through Middle School at St Croix Country Day School.
Christie, you can teach in the private schools without certification, but the pay is less. Might be an option for you, though, and then you can decide whether it's worth it to work towards certification at UVI.
