Space Shuttle "Discovery" - Last Launch to ISS
Good day everyone,
For "kids" of all ages to enjoy: Space Shuttle "Discovery" will be retired following this last mission (STS133 - Space Transportation System 133) to the ISS (International Space Station) as will be the entire shuttle program after the launch of "Endeavour" scheduled for April 2011.
"Discovery" is due to dock to ISS this afternoon at 2:16pm EST. Best wishes to all aboard Discovery and ISS!
Cheers,
Swan
G'day everyone,
Update: For those following ISS and the Space Shuttle Program:
The Space Shuttle Program will now be retired after the launch of "Atlantis," processed formally as STS335 - a "Launch on Demand" (LOD) support/ rescue mission for "Endeavour" (STS134), which is scheduled to launch in mid-April to the ISS - and presently given the status of STS135.
As STS135, "Atlantis" will be the last Space Shuttle to fly prior to the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program. "Atlantis" is scheduled to launch on June 28, 2011, and will deliver to the ISS a MPLM ( Multi-Purpose Carrier Logistics Module) and a LMC (Lightweight Multi-Purpose Carrier).
Cheers,
Swan
Swans, I read something about an effort to map light pollution by having people from all over look at Orion one night soon and compare what they see to a set of photos. I can't find the info anywhere. Do you know anything about this?
Good morning Rhstoo,
Perhaps this link will help. Mapping ends tonight, March 6tth. I hope this helps; I'm not familiar with the project, but it certainly sounds interesting.
Swan
Thanks, Swans! I made my report. Looks like I'm the only one on STX who played.
When it's time to buy a telescope, I may ask for a consult.
Dick
Hi Dick,
Good for you in that you participated! At the end of the main paragraph on the Home Page of Globe at 'Night,' it directs us to "read more...."
Two more campaigns are scheduled: From March 22nd through April 4th for the Northern Hemisphere; and another from March 24th through April 6th for the Southern Hemisphere.
As for a telescope, I would advise you to seek expert opinions and do some research, because the instruments can lead to a large investment based on what your needs would be. Enjoy your stargazing and many thanks for your interest in ISS. (BTW, "Discovery" successfully undocked from ISS this morning at 7:00am EST.) The crew is on their way home; Endeavour flys next!)
