Soon to be mom needing advice
Hello all,
My husband and I are having our first baby due to arrive in Jan. I was wondering if there are other mothers out there that would be willing to give me some advice. I have been on the island for about 4 months now. I prenatal care as soon as I got here and I plan to have my baby here. I am from the Midwest back in the states so, the climate down here is much different.
Here are just a couple of my questions:
I read babies like to be swaddled and they get cold easily, I roast down here. Is it common to swaddle babies down here or do they just wear a one piece?
I know most places don't have ac and just use fans, is it smart to do this with a newborn baby or will they get sick?
As you might be able to tell my questions could just go on and on so, whatever advice anyone could give would be helpful.
The message board has been very helpful to my husband so, I figured why not give it a try.
I am originally from the Midwest as well. I moved here 11 years ago and have a 9 year old son, born here, and a baby on the way (December). With my guy, I swaddled. Some babies don't like it regardless of any heat issues, so you will just have to give it a try and see if it works for you. My guy didn't get hot when he was swaddled. Use a light weight stretchy blanket (bigger than a receiving blanket works better). A good rule of thumb is if you would be really hot in what you are putting on the baby, then the baby is probably going to be hot. Babies just can't regulate their body temperature as well as adults. Swaddling in the winter months at night, you should be good to go. They shouldn't get over heated and uncomfortable. I also just used a fan, no A/C. I just didn't put it on full blast.
You do have to look out for heat rash and rashes of other sorts. Skin rashes are the most common ailment of any baby, not just in the tropics. With my guy, we'd have "naked time" every day where I'd leave his diaper off for awhile. Not only did he love to be free to kick around like crazy, it helped his skin fully dry out and it helped prevent rashes. He mostly lived in onesies. They don't need much more than that during the day. When he was bigger, at night, I usually stuck with long sleeved, long pants, PJ's. That way I didn't have to use a blanket in the crib and if a skeeter found it's way to him in the night he was pretty well protected.
Congrats on the baby! You will probably get all kinds of advice, some of it unsolicited, but remember, you will know what is best when the time comes. If you trust your instincts you will see that what you think is usually the right thing to do for you and your baby. Try not to stress! I'm happy to try and answer any questions for you either on the open forum or in private messages. As far as the pregnancy goes...try to soak in the ocean as often as you can. It really helps out with achy feet and achy body.
