Just a quick update:

I got to STT tuesday and stayed for two nights until my boyfriend picked me up. My luggage was stupidly overweight and as I had to run to not miss my plane I couldn't repack or anything so my dad graciously paid the 125 dollar fee... One bag was 85lbs the other about 60.. nice I know...

I have this weird feeling knowing that I'm here to stay for a while - or maybe it's the large amount of sea food I just ate...

Anywhoot- If you see me walking around with my MSU backpack on stop me say HEY! and then promptly spray me down with any type of mosquito repellant you have in reach... (preferably one with copious amounts of DEET- yes I know, sideaffects chemicals, convulsions...I don't care!) I got over 50 mosquito bites within my first 10 hrs. ..well I stopped counting at 50 I'm sure I've reached some new high... lol

Other than that all is well! I'm on STJ and attempting to not drink my funds away.... heehee wish me luck with that!

Best of luck and good for you! Welcome to your dream come true.

Funny how the emotional 'causes' go by the wayside when we experience the downside of all those horrible things these nasty solutions were intended to fix. Can't wait to hear from posters about the birth defects caused by Deet. Plusses and minusses...so easy to point out the negatives.

I'd love to hear from all those who think the abolishment of DDT was so great in light of the hundreds of thousands of deaths in Africa that could have been prevented with insecticide before the do gooders got involved.

Regardless, you have made the plunge and I really do pray you will succeed. There will be challenges fer sure, but there are challenges everywhere...remember there really is no paradise. Life is full of trade-offs.

With luck the mosquitoes/no-seeums will move on to fresher meat soon. Think of it as a rite of passage. Good luck!

OK Trade how long do you have to live here before you are no longer "fresh meat" - 2 years and counting and they still love me (deet is my friend) I just keep telling my husband I am special and not to forget it 🙂

Ok...so just how BAD is the mosquito situation?
The times I've been in the islands, I've never had a problem with them.
Is it seasonal? Just after a rain? Certain areas?

Gee, Piaa I don't know. Maybe you're just too young instead of old & leathery as I am. I don't know that they don't bite me as I don't notice them.

Neil, it gets bad after extended rains & when water collects & stands. Then they breed do you have to make sure flower pots, etc. empty of collected water. I had workmen in my house all last week & the mosquitos really invaded the house from having doors & sliding screens constantly open.

No matter how unappealing DEET is, I assure you that Dengue is far more unappealing.

Hi there,

We chatted a moment a while back because I am planning to move to STJ and I am coming down for a visit June 1st. Will you be around?

Hello,

MSU grad - all the best, keep us posted on how its going.

Neil - The mosquitos have been bad these last few weeks. How bad... run back inside the house or car bad. LOL. There was a good bit of rain several weeks ago and like Trade mentioned the mosquitos breed in water, so definitely after rain fall you see an increase in them.
