So, how hot IS it?
I do, too, Afriend, otherwise I would not own an A/C unit. My previous home, which is now a long-term rental never had A/C nor needed it as it sits up at a 900 ft. altitude, faces east and north, has high ceilings, tons of large windows on all 4 sides of the house and gets great breezes from the prevailing wind direction. In winter, get out the quilt and wear socks and close some windows as it does get chilly. (comparatively speaking).
My present home is at a much lower altitude, faces north and west has lower ceilings and does require A/C during the hottest parts of the summer. I love this house tho, the quiet of the location and the spectacular views but unlike my previous home, I do need to turn on the A/C here. I sure don't run it 24/7 or I'd be broke. Good thing it's not needed from about Nov. - May so can save up for my A/C indulgence when needed. Comfort wins over heat but I brace myself for the WAPA bill during the summer as it ain't pretty!
;)Seems to be getting warmer as i write this!
would love to have an ac for the bedroom. the house we are renting is not conducive to that . when you buy or rent, check out the windows and make sure they can close all the way. we have those louver things and they suck

replace the screens in your screen frames with 5+ mil plastic... AC READY!
I did the oppisite when I moved in, I replaced all the plastic in my screen frames with screen... haha
I have glass louvers with regular mesh screens in only room that has A/C (my bedroom) but they close tightly so no need for putting in the plastic wrap/covered screens plus during the day the windows are open and allow air flow so no icky smells of a completely closed off room.

Unless the louvers are VERY old, the slats can be easily slid from their brackets to accommodate a window A/C unit.
They are old wooden things that have never and will never shut tight They can be removed but the rest will not shut tight enough

Remove those necessary to allow for the placement of the A/C unit and then have a screen shop make you a half screen covered with heavy clear plastic instead of mesh for the top half of the window. It's an easy and inexpensive solution which I've found perfectly effective.
THAT MIGHT WORK. WE WOULD HAVE TO DO ALL THE WINDOWS In the bedroom and bathroom, might not be too bad. i know it would help with hubbys rash for sure. last time he was in the hospital, his rash almost went away.
Why do you have to do the bathroom?
slatted door
Just hang a curtain on the door. That will give you some airflow when A/C isn't on and keep cold air in bedroom.
that could work too. thanks for the good info all of you
