snakes
okay,
i have been on island for a few weeks now. i walk pretty much everywhere and notice that no matter where i go, i see lizards, i have seen a few frogs as well. but what i am curious about is if there are any snakes wandering through the trees here? are there any that are native to the island? any info would be great. thanks mike
I was told that snakes are prey to mongoose so there are very few snakes if any at all.
It seems I read somewhere that there is only one snake that lives on the islands and it is extremely rare. I have not seen any since we have been here.
Hi,
Our August E-Zine had an article on endangered animals of which the tree boa was one.
Virgin Islands Tree Boa:
The small Virgin Islands Boa has a distinct mottled pattern, light grey-brown with dark brown markings and a cream colored belly with dark markings. They are known to live in steep coastal forest among dry rocky soil. They eat small lizards and more infrequently small mammals and birds. The tree boa is almost never seen in the Virgin Islands, it has become endangered due to large-scale habitat destruction and its demise was greatly impacted by the introduction of the mongoose.

Unfortunately, like some other local species the snakes 'e gahn boosh!
Hi ars,
What is boosh???
'tis bush! It's an island saying when something's "gone", or can't be found anymore; they say "e gahn boosh!"
Tank You Ars!!!
When I hiked the Reef Bay trail on St. John with the wonderful park ranger (and, of course, many, many others) she mentioned that there were no poisonous snakes on island which made me feel...well, better.
