Smith Ferry runs on reef on Little St. James passage
Last night 90 passengers were on board when the ferry was taking passengers back to St. Croix from St. Johns fireworks. They went through a passage at cruising speed and the entire ferry is up on the reef. Eyewitnesses say they can see the entire boat out.
What this means is the only ferry we have connecting St. Croix to St. Thomas will probably not be usable. If it is as bad as that, it will need to be cut in two to be taken off the reef. So sad.
any pics? I would love to see pics of this.
I'm sure it will be on the news. The passengers were taken by private and commercial rescue boats that were in the area. Two passengers were taken to the hospital.
not finding anything on this in The Worst....I mean Source....they are so horrible in reporting news
It happened after the fireworks last night. when is print for the Source?
It's in today's Daily News, page 8.
It's in today's Daily News, page 8.
ok thanks, hopefully I'll get to see it after 6pm online
Is the Royal Belmar one of Smith Ferry boats? Here's a Coast Guard press release. http://www.d7publicaffairs.com/go/doc/586/1129987/
That is not what I would call cutting through a passage......that is downright on shore........hard to explain that other than not paying attention to the shoreline. Sad!
The passage between Great St James and St Thomas was quite a distance away. They never got to the passage.
The Source has an article now: http://stcroixsource.com/content/news/local-news/2011/07/05/many-six-injured-monday-night-ferry-crash
Thanks for that Bob. Just looking at the picture it looks like when they move the vessel it will cause more damage to both the reef and the vessel.
So costly. What is strong enough to move that? I wish them all the luck possible but this doesn't look good.
That article was killing me. How could the accident happen Monday night and everyone be rescued by four am SUNDAY? I thought Tuesday followed Monday.
An update from the VI Daily News:
ROYAL MISS BELMAR 'REALLY STUCK' ON GREAT ST. JAMES
ST. THOMAS - The 100-ton Royal Miss Belmar, which crashed onto Great St. James Cay on July 4, remains anchored to the rock while officials seek a crafty solution for dislodging the passenger ferry without damaging the endangered coral colonies that surround it.
"It's really stuck there," U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said Wednesday.
Solutions to the grounding could include using a crane to lift the ferry onto a barge, inflating large pillows under the craft so it can slide onto a barge, or cutting the ferry into pieces and shipping it that way across the sea, Castrodad and other officials said.

Whew! Glad they got it off in one piece! I was worried when one of the options was to cut it up...
I keep waiting to hear the cause of the grounding of our Royal Miss Belmar ferry. I wonder if it will be this interesting: http://news.yahoo.com/ferry-runs-aground-captain-stuck-toilet-152914917.html
Ferry runs aground after captain stuck in toilet
HELSINKI (Reuters) - A Finnish ferry has run aground while its captain was stuck in the bathroom.
One member of staff managed to slow the island-hopping tourist ferry down, but the vessel, carrying 54 passengers, slammed onto a rock near the shore of Helsinki, the Finnish coastguard said on Friday.
The captain got stuck in the bathroom because of a jammed lock and yelled for help, the coastguard said.
Some passengers were bruised and tableware was broken in the incident. The coastguard is investigating whether the captain's actions amounted to criminal endangerment.
"He was stuck in the toilet. As soon as the staff member got the door open, it was too late," said Jan Sundell, head of investigation.
