Smell smoke on STX
Just woke up to the smell of smoke. I'm above salt river, and it looks real smoky out. Anyone know where the fire is?
Well now an hour later, I do not smell the smoke!
could have been trash burning. i see that a lot on the way to work
We still have campers at the beach in Salt River.
I smelled smoke last night around 8 PM.
We have lots of burned bush around the salt river area.
The people at the beach need to be more careful. They really shouldn't be there, Easter camping is over.
Aren't they supposed to have permits to camp?
Call DPNR?
Permits to camp? Who in the VI would bother getting one knowing that there is no enforcement? Isn't camping it a cultural thing...like littering?
Yes, there is that. Complete disregard of laws as well as a lack of enforcement on many levels.
Yes, they are supposed to have permits but they don't enforce it.
Since DPNR just had their critique by EPA, they may be willing to step up their game under a new Dept. head. Never hurts to call and report something.
and for ANY fire a Permit is required... especially during these dry times. All beach fires (sea turtle nesting habitat) should always be reported as well.
It's been reported to DPNR and the park service.
Good for you.
It's been extremely dry here on STT, too.
Our cool winter season is over and it's hot!
The park ranger just did a drive by.
Maybe now something will happen.
I noticed yesterday a new tent that set up at Columbus landing. Really!
There has been someone camping on Hans Lollik all week. I sure hope they have their permits..
It's a private island so they can use at will unless owner has a manager and campers have integrity in removing all their waste.
The "West Indian Opossum" aka Palm Rats are sure to give them a thrill!;)
Actually, it turned out the smoke was from the arson of heavy equipment at WAPA that some of the employees started to protest VITOL bringing in employees from Peurto Rico. Some heavy equipment and a Jeep Liberty!!!
According to the VI Con
UPDATE: Jean P. Greaux, Jr., Director of Corporate Communications at WAPA, made contact with the Consortium and said that, despite Senator Francis’ assertion that the torched Jeep Liberty and Heavy Equipment happened as a result of unfair hiring practices by Vitol and was perpetrated by disgruntled employees; authorities investigating the incident have classified the occurrence as an act of arson, as no information has been made available as to who committed the crime.
IS THERE AN EDITOR IN THE HOUSE?

At the Consortium? HA! 😀
Here's a Daily News link about recent fires on STX.

STT is getting very dry and brown looking too but STX seems to have a continual issue with brush fires over the years. Hope we all will get some beneficial rains soon.
Rain ain stop no Carnival!

You're lucky the arsonists don't to STT for Carnival!
