Small world/small island
I had an interesting experience today that reminds what a small community we have on each island.
I was checking out in the express line at Plaza near Sunny Isle on St Croix this morning and older distinguished looking man in front of me wrote a small check for his purchases. The checker had problems with the check approval machine so he had to stand for a few extra minutes.
During that time several people quietly said hello to him and seemed pleased to see him. so I assumed he was well known.
After he moved out to the parking lot the man behind me told the checker and me that the customer was former Governor Juan L Luis.
Yea... the guy they named the hospital after. He was governor of the USVI in the late 70's and eartly 80's. all he wanted was to get his 25 dollar check approved.
small world....
That is way, way cool, and the sense of community is what makes this island so very special to me. We will have to keep our eyes open for him -- and you, too!
We got our taste of the small community within a week after moving down here. We were staying in F'sted while we waited to close on our home. As often happens, something came up and we had to put off the closing, which was to take place in C'sted. When we drove back across the island and Hubby walked into the lobby of our hotel, the owners and staff greeted him with, "Sorry to hear things didn't go as planned today. Will you be staying with us a little longer since you weren't able to close on your house?" Yep, the new traveled that quickly.
While this close knittedness can have its downsides, I love being able to bump into friends all over the island and know that folks are looking out for each other. One of the great upsides of living here, imho.
Would really enjoy hearing other "small island/small world" stories if folks are willing to share them...

HipCrip: I'd been here for about four years, as I recall, and was working for WICO (pre-government-purchase!) and was walking through the Havensight Mall and someone was walking towards me who looked awfully familiar.
He stopped and I stopped and we said in the same breath, "What are YOU doing here?"
He was a musician and his girlfriend was a jazz singer and I'd befriended both of them while we were living in adjacent apartments in a wonderful brownstone in New Haven, Connecticut.
They'd broken up, apparently, and he was working on a cruise ship..small world,
