Single Dad & 12 yr old daughter moving to St. Croix needs advice
Come for a month or two as a renter, then figure out where to live. Don't lock into anything yet. East, West, Central, South and North are far more different than you would think and I know now, from the states, you're thinking it's only 22 miles long, what's the big deal, but trust me, it is a huge deal once you're here.

Teen pregnancy, drugs and alcohol very prevalent on island. Culturally , single motherhood very common. Sometimes several children with different fathers. Its a way of life. So just know you will not be escaping that scene.
As far as drugs, I'm sure meth and heroin are not readily available, because the Caribbean is not the normal route for them, but cocaine is far more prevalent than anywhere you have been in the States. I've noted here before that even Burger King when it was on STT sold Coors Light, and you can buy hard liquor, cheap, almost 24/7/364 (what's the one day again, Good Friday, it's half a day?) on the islands, and the drinking age is not enforced. Pills, like everywhere else, is a problem as well.
Just wanted to follow up with this poster to see if he and his daughter made the move. We have been here since June and I would like to see if his 12 year old has had any luck making friends on the island. We moved here with our 21 year old, 19 year old, 17 year old and 12 year old. All but one left us just before Christmas and went back to Texas The 12 year old has remained with us - for now. I cannot bear to lose another child to the states but she sure is lonely. Wondering if anyone knows how preteens meet and greet.
Thanks for your response.
wow, i do feel terrible. what about activities in school or the swim team or the boys and girls club i think there is even a sailing club
Are you home schooling your daughter? Is that why she's not meeting or making friends with other kids?
Maybe you can find a homeschooling group from STX on Facebook or start one for a once a week playdate on one of local beaches.
I'm sure you're not the only one in that position.
Join the yacht club or see what activities there have. Most people with kids take them to the same beaches on weekends. Look for families on the beaches on weekends.
Maybe start a different post to address this and see if other transplants/homeschoolers has same problems.
How about girl scouts, etc.
