Should I Ship My Car?

I am moving on island the second week of May and am confused about best way to handle the car situation. I have an older Buick, it's in pretty good shape but only worth 2200.00 on a good day. My money is tight, is it better to sell it here? Will I be able to buy a fairly decent car for about 2000.00?

Sell it at home and buy one on island. You can get a pretty good car here for $2,000. The hassles of shipping it, taxes, inspection, registration, etc. really aren't worth it for a car only worth $2,200.

Thanks Marty! I appreciate the feedback, shipping would have been a hassle. Marty, can I pump your brain a little ? I've got a lead on an apartment, a 1 bdrm in Shibui, is this a decent area? I'm a single woman and I'm concerned about this move, excited but concerned. I immigrated to Grand Cayman just in time to be blown back to Chicago by Ivan. I had spent a lot of time in Cayman, but I've only been to St Thomas once before. I've been applying for jobs but have had no success yet. ANY advice you can offer i'd like to hear. thanks again, Lou

Shibui is quite nice and certainly fine to start off with. As far as jobs go, I wouldn't waste time sending out resumes as most employers won't respond to them. Once you get here you can start hoofing it and if you're bright, personable, adaptable and have a good work ethic, you won't have a problem finding a job. Good luck!

Dear STT Resident, Thanks for the input! I'm sure everything will be fine. I'm glad to hear Shibui is ok, it's a little pricey and I'm concerned about signing a 1 year lease, Wish it was more in the $700-$800 range. It's a relief to hear that cars are reasonable, I contacted Managed Freight and they thought it would run me about 2400.00 before their fee. I can't wait for the end of the month!!

Hello Lou,

Shibui is a nice place. I believe its gated, has a pool etc. so that plays into the price.

If the shipping of your car is going to cost more then the car is worth I would say sell it and buy something here.

Hey! I'm slightly confused here. I had spoken with Stryker Real Estate about a one bedroom apartment; i was emailed photos, called them back and agreed to take the apartment. I was requested to priority mail the deposit which I did that same day(Tuesday). Today I received an email stating that he had rented the place to someone else. I am upset, disappointed and worried about what the heck to do now, also out the cost of a cashier's check and mailing. Is this really shady or is it me? I realize there is sceptisism about newbies but when you're holding 3,000.00 of my money, I'm gonna be upfront with you. Boo hoo Lou

Islander, The comment implied was "I have the money in my hand" It's better this way, I wouldn't want him for a landlord, he'd yell about my drunken orgies. Joke.

But Stryker should be resposible for refunding your $$...plus the cost of the cashier's check and the postage!! Demand it! These yoyos need to realize that they can't treat people that way just because they aren't on island....and once you live on island, they STILL try to pull that sh*t!

Marty on Stt, I emailed him and requested that the check be returned by priority mail as that was the way he received it. Funny enough I called about another rental and the gentleman I spoke with had nothing good to say about Stryker R.E. . In retrospect I'm lucky not to deal with B.S. for an entire year. Lou

Very difficult to deal with the realtors from off island. Always best to be here and face them!

Your situation is very typical...it's just the way it is...DO NOT get in his face, you are on there terms and it really won't do any good. That's da island life mon!
