Hello everyone!!

I have a question that maybe someone could help me out with!

Does anyone know of a short term rental place that welcomes dogs in St. Thomas or St. Croix ??

It would be possibly 2 months maybe longer (you never know!!). I have been in the process of deciding if I want to permenantly relocate to the USVI and would like to stay short term before making the big decision and want to make sure my dog would be happy there as well. If anyone could help me out, or has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

ST THomas:
If your visit will be during the summer, I would suggest trying the Mafolie Hotel (340-774-2790). I don't think they generally take pets, but they may be willing to make an exception during summer and if you are REALLY desparate. 🙂 Ask for Natasha or Helga.
Also, not sure if Ronnie accepts pets. he frequents this board and may give you a response.

What size dog is it? The trouble I have had in the past is, dogs aren't as well behaved as their owners say they are, and some owners don't take care to have them go where they are supposed to!
Saying that, I am now hesitant to believe someone and believe that they are
sincere or not. Their 'quiet' dogs bark all day disturbing those who work nights and sleep days.
Maybe, they can sign an agreement that if their dogs don't comply, they will move on? Still trying to decide!

Ronnie,

Hello!!

Here's a little info about my dog

He is a large breed mixed dog, 100#, he does bark once when someone knocks on the front door to my house. It is usually a low growl (not mean) noise more than a bark. He does not mind being left alone and does not bark when left, my next door neighbors have told me this and I currently live in an old rowhouse with thin walls. Fully housebroken (he will only go at my house in the backyard and at the park, no where else not even my boyfriends yard !! ). Very obedient, we are actually starting more training classes next month. I think the idea about signing an agreement is great and would have no problem doing so. If you don't feel comfortable because of past experiences I completely understand maybe you could help me out or give me some other leads, I would love to live in the VI's (!!) but I love my dog even more and if he can't come with me then its not an option !!!!!!

Thanks!

Would you leave him in your bedroom all day? Compared to a whole apartment.

I would never leave him alone all day. I did forget to mention that he is crate trained and when I am going to be gone for a few hours he is put in his crate. Whenever he's in there he just usually sleeps.

Dogs who are crate trained are actually more secure when they are in their crate. A few hours doesn't hurt them. They are the same size as doghouses and when you come home you and the dog are happy since the house isn't tore up and the dog doesn't get yelled at. 😉

A crate is usually a dog's "safe place" if they were raised and trained with a crate then they don't mind. My dog will lay in his crate even when I am home with the door open, it's like his little room

I second the crate training technique...helps the pooch adjust no matter where he is, b/c he still has his "home."

I Third the Crate training technique...

I have worked in our local humane society (Amery, WI) as an animal caregiver for over 2 years and we use crate training for all our puppies and non-potty trained adult dogs.
We encourage our adopters to keep their dogs inside the house as much as possible and depending on the dog's indoor behavior (destructive chewing and/or compulsive barking) or level of potty training accomplished- a crate can be a wonderful thing!

The positive side would be things mentioned in the above posts, the comfort and security of his own safe place (important in noisy, active households with kids!)
Instead of the dog chewing up/peeing/pooping on what ever he comes across, you will need to provide special chewy treats/toys that are given ONLY when he/she is in the crate. We have noticed dogs tend to bark less when crated, provided they have toys and are given enough exercise & playtime. Many landlords will reconsider their "no pet" policy knowing the dog would be crated when you are gone (no dog damage to repair!)

Then there is the negative side: Some ignorant people abuse the crate training thing by keeping their dog confined for 8-10 hrs while they are at work. They let the dog out for a couple of hours (with no outdoor playtime or long walk because they are too tired after a day @ work) Then the dog gets put back in the crate overnight again. In the AM the dog is let out to go potty & eat then gets put back in the crate for the whole day!!!

The Humane Society of the United States has info on crate training- cut and paste this address into the navigation window of your web browser:

www.hsus.org/ace/15890

They also have an excellent page with advice for owners searching for pet friendly landlords- Cut & paste this address:

http://65.61.158.165/ace/13354 (do not include "www")

Some of the info might on this page not apply directly to the Virgins... but it will give you food for thought and perhaps help you convince a potential landlord to at least give you and your dog a chance!

Actually my dog was crate trained also and you are absolutely right, all of you! It was a little levity when I responded to dog in crate. Didn't mean to stir up trouble.

Hi Sharon-

You can check with Joe over at Cane Bay Reef Resort on STX. He has an apt he sometimes rents short term to folks with pets. See if it's available. His number is
(800) 253-8534. Its not a fancy place, but its home and the on site bar/restaurant has good food, reasonably priced.

Good Luck-
Abbi
