Shipping Port

I read that many here ship their stuff first to Florida and then the Islands. Would it make sence to so so if you already live near a port. Philadelphia/NJ and New York have major ports. Has anyone experience if it is more cost time and effective to ship right from the east coast?
Thanks
Iris

Iris,

Sorry, I haven't replied to questions earlier. I am online when the phone lines allow me to be. We used Crowley to ship our household goods from Missouri to here. They did ship via a port in Florida. If you haven't already, search back in early June or maybe May of this year on this board. I swear someone shipped from somewhere on the East Coast and surely there are places to do that. I would still start from STT and work backwards. You don't want problems with a shipping company that is unfamilar with customs here or ways of doing things that would hold up your shipping. We paid a total of $3800 for Crowley to ship to here on a 20' crate. Our crate is supposed to arrive at our home tomorrow. We finally got thru customs and now they have to assess whether or not they can make to our door so to speak. Good luck with everything. I honestly can say that the worst is behind us. Of course I say that knowing that our crate in whatever condition is here on island. More on that later.

Pennsauken, NJ. That's where Crowley has their NE outlet. I heard it was about $1000 to ship from there.

Thank you for the info. Pennsauken, NJ is almost around the block from here. I think I have seen their containers in the Philadelphia port. I will seek them out and get more info. We are looking to move to STX. I have a very heavy photography stand I would like to keep. The rest of my photo equipment is quite small. It is good to be able to estimate some of this cost now. I am still working on my husband (king of pack rats) 😉

He is slowly warming to the idea of getting rid of stuff.

I found 2 web sites crawley.com and http://www.nationalmoving.com/moving_services/
National seems to have more information and is using crawley.

When you ask for a estimate do you say you are moving out of state or international. As STX is the islands they might not consider that a simple out of state move.

Thanks
