Shipping new scooter

Hello all.

I have been thinking of buying one of the 250cc Scooters from ebay and having it shipped to St. Croix. Has anyone done this?

All of the sellers I have contacted so far do not ship to the VI.

I'm guessing to do this I would have to have it shipped to one of the shipping companies in Florida directly, if possible, and then have it sent over. I don't know if any shippers would want it shipped to them without someone there to drop it off/sign paperwork.

If you have done this, or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks!

Darrin

Darrin, I bought a new scooter, a Yamaha 125 Vino, from a dealer in Ft. Lauderdale (sight unseen, I was in Missouri) and they were happy to seal it up with bubble wrap and take it to the port for shipment. There was a small charge for this...I think $100 and around $200 to ship it. It arrived in STX in perfect condition. I'm not sure about e-bay. Try Varsity Cycle in Ft. Lauderdale. Good Luck riding! That was some of the best scooter riding of my life!

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of getting a scooter as well. I used to have one in Seattle and was thinking that STX (even with it's crappy roads) is still a great place to have one. I just need to know what is required as far as licencing goes. In Washington State, all I needed was a regular drivers' license to ride anything less than 60cc on the road. What will I need in STX and who did you use to ship from Lauderdale? Any suggestions? I plan on buying an 80cc Honda Elite from a dealer...

Thanks to anyone who posts!

The problm with a scooter as regards the roads is the small size of their wheels and the large size and frequency of potholes. You can probably avoid 90% of the potholes, however given the narrow roads, the lack of shoulders, and the congestion that is present, (typically around Sunny Isle), avoiding potholes may prove difficult at times. In addition, the small size of the scooter you are thinking of (Honda Elite) will make it difficult to see in an area where many motorists are not accustomed to sharing the road with two wheeled vehicles. If you are committed to getting and using a motorcycle or scooter, I would think something a bit bigger than an 80cc Elite would serve your needsa a bit better on an ongoing basis.

This company ships to the USVI.

http://stores.ebay.com/SunFlower-Power-Sports

I was told by them that shipping was around 300 to the vi. Hope this helps.

I asked some of these questions a while back. If I remember correctly. No special license is required for any size scooter and registration is done in the same manner as a motorcycle or car. Once again this is how I remember it I have been wrong before... ask my longtime girlfriend. Run a search as I was part of a thread about this not too long ago. I was advised to get something with a little more power. Sunflower sells a 150cc. This is what I am thinking of doing if I ever make it to the islands.

AJ,
I used Tropical Shipping for my scooter. You have to register, license and insure your scoot just like a regular motorcycle. Remember I had a 125 so it may be different for a smaller scooter. I'm not sure about a motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license. They never ask to see mine but I did have one. Asbnk1227 said you may want to get something bigger, I agree. The 80 would work here if you ride only solo. Just don't be in a hurry on the hilly part of the island. I never really found the pot holes to be a problem. However watchout for the holes of pot.
That could cause a mishap.

I was able to ship my BV Piaggo 200cc scooter with my container holding all my furniture....so if you are bringing any furniture that is an idea. I have had no problem with the roads or potholes. With this size scooter the wheels are the same as a motorcycle and much more stable then those littel 50cc models...The trouble i have had is finding someone on STX to repair bikes. Mine has been out of commission for at least a year, if anyone knows anyone pllllllease email me 🙂
