*hokay ... first timer here ...

last month i got a lead on a cyber-café management job on stt ... it didn't pan out, but my adventurous spirit was rekindled

sooooo ... my girlfriend and i will be visiting the island during the first week in august to scout out a place to live and, hopefully, catch a job interview or two ... or at least a couple of face-to-faces ... accounting, bookkeeping, office management, administrative assistant, etc ... something along those lines

we'll then be moving down permanently on october 1st (or so)

i've got the relocation guide (it's great !) and it has me more stoked than ever

relative to the august visit ... plan is to stay in the vessup bay estates area for the week ... is this an okay place to operate from? ... we don't need, or want, anything overly fancy ... just basics

AND relative to the october move:

1. is it possible to ship any belongings INSIDE the car when it is shipped? ... i'm thinking in terms of a safer way than mail to get my computer down there ... as well as an easier way to ship a bunch of clothes ... or does the car have to be "stripped"?

2. would it be worth the effort to strike up a relationship with a local realtor to get assistance in finding a long-term rental? ... again, nothing at all fancy ... just the island basics ... grass hut ... you know, that kind of thing .. no, really ... small apt or cottage or whatever ... furnished, for at least a year ... then we could take a look at an unfurnishd place to furnish ourselves

any thoughts?

thanks, clay

Hello Clay,

Rent a car and you will be fine for anywhere on the island really, the island isn't very big and with a car driving where you need to go will mean anything from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending of distance. Definately get a car.

I have heard of people putting cloths and things in their trunk for shipping. Ask the compnay you are using to ship with to confirm.

Realtor is not necessary for finding an apartment. You need to get the Daily News and Island Trader and look through the classifieds, call the landlords, go check out the place, ask the price and all the questions you have, see if its workable for you in terms of localtion to town and places you would want to go - beaches, stores?? And then visit say 5-10 places and see what works best for you - you can do it on your own.

Clay: My only comment about Vessup Bay area is that it is pretty far from town. If you rent a car it isn't a problem, but if you are expecting to take cabs or the safari, it could be. About putting stuff in your car, check with the shipping company, but I don't think they will insure contents. I did pack my trunk with books as they were too heavy to ship and I figured- not much chance in today's world of a literate thief! 😉 Clothes went in boxes USPS. About housing: I agree with Islander- when you are on your visit ask evryone you meet, read the Island Trader and look at bulletin boards. Think networking! If you get positive job nibbles, see if they have any ideas.

Definately on the books - costly to ship. Light things are good to pack up and ship via post office. But double check with shippers for items in trunk.

I'm moving to St. Croix this week and I shipped 180lbs through the post offing from New Orleans. It only costed me $121, which was 4 boxes.
