Shipping a car
Hello, all! Made the housing trip last week (it truly is difficult finding a landlord who's willing to let us bring the Marley-dog, but we did!), sold the house here today and gave notice at work. In four weeks we'll be living in virtual summer with the rest of you! Just one hang-up - finding the few movers that have responded to our request for shipping estimates have been extremely high. They appear to be reputable, but, good grief, I could buy a car on the island for what they want to ship ours! Just for a frame of reference, would any of you be willing to share what you paid to ship your car(s) to STT? Besides the car, we'll be bringing one bedroom suite, some clothes and a few household items. Also, is it more practical to sell our 6-month old Saturn on the mainland and purchase a new, more island-friendly vehicle there? Anyone drive to Miami and ship from that port? All these questions! Hope to hear from you soon and thanks in advance!
I'm sure you will get some response because this is an often asked question. Be sure to
SEARCH earlier posts. After clicking on search "at the top of this page", I entered "ship car" and got more posts than I wanted to read. Most of your answers are right here.
Its cheaper to ship from Miami... so if driving is an option for you then perhaps you should do that. Yes others have done that... a few threads done Onik'a a frequent poster on this board mentioned driving from Calif. to Flor. to ship their items and to make the transport for their pets shorter in terms of plane ride.
Do a search like BD suggested so you can read other comments on this.

I shipped mine when I moved there using Tropical Shipping from Ft. Lauderdale. If I remember correctly, the car had to be paid off before being able to ship it (ie, I had to be the title holder, not a bank or financing company). I drove it from North Carolina to Ft. Lauderdale, and found that the whole process was pretty easy. Getting it checked in to Tropical took less than an hour, and I was allowed to pack up the car with stuff to the level of the windows, as well as the trunk. I can't remember what I paid for the shipping alone, but I remember that shipping my car and getting it registered in St. Thomas cost less than $1200 total. I was really impressed with Tropical's service....they said they would call the day that the ship came in with my car on it, and they called within the hour, and everything was in perfect condition on arrival. Good luck!
