shipping a car BACk from the states
Worst case senrio, we move to the island and it doesn't quite fit us and we move back home...do you have to pay road tax and duty to get it back to the states?
That would be a question best answered by the Port Authority in the State you plan on re-entering. But, honestly, most people wouldn't ship their car back, just because of the expense. Your best bet is to sell your car in the States, buy one when you get here, then sell it and buy one in the States when you get there. A lot less hassles, and cheaper in the long run.
It isn't a lot of hassle shipping a car to the VI if you are willing to write the checks. I have shipped three cars here including a Jeep for my neighbor that arrived yesterday.
It took me thirty minutes to drop the Jeep at Tropical's dock in West Palm Beach on April 14th. I paid them $50 to handle the outward bound customs clearance.
I used Fleming's Transport to handle all the arrangements on STX. I paid them $250 to process the paperwork on this end and register the car.
The only thing I had to do was write them a check and drive to the dock and pick up the Jeep when the process was completed.
Total cost for all fees, shipping, insurance, taxes, ect. $2,498. The shipping fees charged by Tropical were $1,422 which is approximately what it will cost you to ship a car back to Florida. Depending on what state you wanted to re register the car in you might have to pay either, sales, use or road tax.
In conclusion, I have spent more time at the Post Office shipping packages to the VI, waiting in line, than the time I spent shipping cars.

Jim, the poster is asking about shipping a car BACK to the States from here.
I was responding to Marty who said shipping cars is a big hasel. It isn't, just somewhatr expensive.
In Illinois where I used to live to transfer title for a vehicle you would pay a minimum tax based on the value of the vehicle. When I gave a car to my son he had to pay a tax regardless of the fact that he paid zero for the vehicle.

I just shipped my truck back to the states. I haven't picked it up yet but from what I understand I won't have to pay anything more than the shipping fees ($829) and registration in my home state, but that is because my vehicle was made in the US, if it was a foreign made vehicle I would have to pay some fee/tax. The process for getting it ready to ship is essentially the same as receiving it here just in reverse. So, it is no more difficlut to ship a truck back as it is to ship it here.

Jim,
The hassles still remain, but if you are willing to pay someone else to deal with it them, then you just don't see them. Once again, MOST people wouldn't ship back to the States because of the cost and hassle...if you pay to avoid the hassle, then the cost goes up, yes? In my opinion, still easier to buy here and sell here...
Marty:
Money usually makes things easier but not always one happier.
It is also less expensive to do a brake job on your car by picking up the pads and shoes at Western Auto. Doing a brake job isn't that hard but it is a hassle.
Life is a series of choices; your money vs. your time.

Jim,
Regarding the brake job: As a mechanic, I do them myself, as well, because it is cheaper, but I also downshift to help save the pads and shoes from wearing out as fast. Life is a series of choices; your money vs. your time.
