hey islanders, i am planning on making the move to st. thomas and was curious about shipping a car. i used the info on the site about shipping a car and it was great, so i have 2 questions that weren't answered.
1. how do you "find a local" to take care of the busy work of registering it and such?
2. about how much does it cost to ship a midsize american made, american assembled car and what are some shipping companies?

thanks for any help anyone can give me
cliff

p.s. this message board has been more help than any other source!!

Check with Tropical about shipping your car. I found their number in the Settler's handbook. They were very helpful and quoted me a price on the phone.. We're shipping two cars. One's a van and the other is a Triumph TR7. It will cost about $1500 for both. If I recall correctly, taxes are 11 cents per pound for the cars.

There are several people that do the work for you. The one I find most reliable these days is KJ. 340 771.2469.

Mark,
Why don't you give him a call. I'm sure he'll tell you how much he charges! Seems alot more efficient than waiting for an answer on a message board. :o)

Varies, usually around $100 plus the costs.

I just helped my girlfriend move back to St. Thomas with her two cats in January. We spent the day getting her car out of customs.
I can't remember if she shipped with Tropical or Crowley, but we started there getting the manifest. There is an exact order you must follow. First I think we went to the insurance company and purchased insurance, then to the IRS to pay road insurance, then customs to pay more $(They are closed from 12-1) and if I remember correctly it was based on the value because he looked in a blue book because she didn't have a document of sale.( It came from her Mother's estate and was a gift.) Then to the Licence Department and paid more $, then got it inspected. And at each place you take a number and wait
You must have VI plates.
By the way the cats were no problem and are loving life on the island.
Hope this has been helpful.
By the way, at each place we went it was well over $200 not counting the $750 to ship.
K
