seurity camera system ?
We want to get a camera security system for our stx home. Has anyone used a company on island? We are also considering buying a setup stateside and bringing it down to install.
Any systems that reboot automatically after a power outage? I've spoken to a couple companies and they say their equipment has to be manually reset to begin anew. They also recommend and some require a UPS to keep the system running.
You should have a UPS system for it in any event as well as for all your electronic equipment. If you know how to install and set up, probably less expensive to buy your own.
You can easily do it yourself. We have used FOSCAM IP cameras and they couldn't be easy to install. We have several of them around our home (indoor and outdoor) and several at our business. When I'm at the office, I monitor the house right on my computer screen and same when at home, I can watch the office. When we're away or at the beach, I can check either location on my smart phone with the Foscam app. You will need a static IP address which your ISP can set up. Other than that, its was simple to set up. You could pay hundreds and hundreds by having a security do it but why. Foscam ships here too!

This do it your self system from Lowe's is a good way to go but uses the internet and wireless modem which from reading this board can be spotty. No monthly fees unless you want the video to be archived. A basic system purchase can be expanded upon.
We have IRIS purchased from Lowe's. Set it up ourselves. We pay the extra to have the video clips (when motion is sensed, camera is activated, 30 second video clips are recorded and saved which you can review/retrieve online). It's $10/month. Worth every penny.
Every time there's been a power outage and the hub has gone down, it comes back online by itself. No reset necessary. The instructions that come with the system are crap but we didn't hesitate to call the 800-your-installation-instructions-are-crap number and they walked us through the steps. They admitted their instructions were missing steps. Maybe they've got that problem resolved now.
thanks. That (the IRIS) sounds like what we need, so we will follow up with Lowes and see what we can get.
Better read the reviews first. I would never buy the IRIS system based on what I just read.
well, just knowing that there are systems that sound like they will do what we need under VI conditions is what I was hoping to find out about. Now I will pursue the subject in some depth, knowing that there are systems made that should fill our needs and situation. The first couple folks I had spoken with just told me it could not be done.
Just a follow-up on my experience with IRIS system. The camera works well. The door sensors generally work reliably except for the one down, down below the house but that's a different issue not related to IRIS. After initial installation of the system, we purchased and tried to install the power monitor thing but couldn't get it to work so returned it and received refund. We read the reviews prior to purchase as well but for the price we decided to roll the dice - and knowing that we could always send it back for full refund. There are other products out there on the market. I'm sure you'll find the one that is best for your needs.
