Hello-

I am considering moving to the USVI. I have many years of serving experience and figure it would be the easiest job for me to pursure. Can anyone give me any feedback? Is it possible to acquire a job before moving? And if not, is it easy to get a serving job in the Islands?

Thanks.

But no, it is not possible to get a server job on any of the 3 islands without being on island, standing in front of the person hiring.

I had a tenant last year who was hired to work as a server at the Buccaneer from off island. I've know quite several people on St. Thomas who were hired to work at the Ritz and the Marriott, in various F&B capacities, from off island. Of course it's easier if you are already here, but not impossible, if you are applying at the large resorts. Some of the more upscale, fine-dining places will also review a resume and possibly offer you a position, if your resume is OUTSTANDING, and your references, too.

Usually it's easier to get a job in a resort if you're in the company already or have a strong resort background. It's slow right now on STT & STJ but things crank up in the early autumn. You're best shot is to be here & be presentable when you apply. Take any job until you get a good rep as a reliable honest worker & then you can move up to better jobs. Word gets around fast if you steal, don't show up, etc.

one of the fine dining places had a "stealing" bartender working for them last night as a temp, he worked once for a friend and the till was 80 bucks short at the end of the night

Juanita is correct, you may be able to line up a job from off island. But, IMO, no employer, and certainly not up any scale resorts, will seal the deal until they see you and talk to you in person.

I think Billd means a health card which all food service, bartenders, etc. have to have here.
