Sendoff GetTogether For Ric and Linda J At Off The Wall on Saturday
Sheesh,
I didn't quantify how many or claim that there were more than a few...I did not sensationalize or exaggerate...if I did then the National Park Service is right there along with me! They have given exactly the same warning out for exactly the same reason that I did. I was merely giving some advice (as a seasoned back country traveller, rancher and state certified emergency first-responder) to anyone considering following the back roads in the inhospitable deserts and mountains in the South West area of the US.
Jackpot, Nevada - Albert Chretian (missing over 6months- presumed dead)

Death Valley - 6 year old boy dead - see this link for quotes and warnings about relying on GPS

These are just two deaths - there are others who were rescued in time. I would rather have a safe and fun trip, than a week spent trying not to have to drink my own piss or stay warm once the gas runs out...but, each to their own!
This is the warning that the National Parks Service has posted to avoid just such tragedies and unpleasant situations:
"GPS Navigation to sites to remote locations like Death Valley are notoriously unreliable. Numerous travelers have been directed to the wrong location or even dead-end or closed roads. Travelers should always carry up-to-date road maps to check the accuracy of GPS directions."
I would add again that checking with Park Rangers, Sheriffs and locals for road closures, unusual conditions is also a must.
Sorry, I missed it. I wasn't hiding behind my computer, I had to work.
