Selling a Car - Paperwork?
Firstly - yes, I've searched the archives, but I would like some up to date info as I'm getting two different stories. Here on STX I'm selling one of my vehicles (as I've got one too many) and have the registration in hand, no liens/tickets etc. In order to sell it I thought I only required the registration to be signed over and notarized, along with a notarized bill of sale, and copy of my license.
However someone I spoke too said I also need the title. When I purchased and registered the car they did not give me the title, only the registration. If I need to get a title from DMV this will delay the sale and the pending new owner really needs the vehicle. I can't check with DMV as they are closed today and tomorrow.- arghh! I don't want to give the buyer the keys/paperwork and then find out we are missing something needed for him to register it.
So - does any one know if the title is really required, or is the notarized registration and bill of sale sufficient for transferring ownership?
Help - Thanks!
yes the title is required. There is a place to sign it over to the new owner so he can get an updated title from public safety
That's why it's called "transferring the title".
Actually older cars didn't have titles, they are now issuing them. I sold an older car a little over a year ago. I had the bill of sale and registration notarized, went ot DMV they made me buy a title, then I had to go back and have that notarized and then go back again. The seller and the new owner both had to be there. I got the title in in less than an hour.
