What is going on with the Schooner Bay Market? The shelves are bare.

they usually are and some stuff in the freezer has been there for months. be careful with some of the meat-green and one time we got chicken there and the texture was like that of fake chicken-did not eat it.
produce selection seems to be good.

I haven't been in SB lately but this is September...seems every grocery tries to run down its stock at this time of year...a combination of the snowbirds etc being gone, and the H season...no one wants to lose more than they have to is a storm comes through. I know Plaza would not restock some of their soups etc, from say April or so until November-early December, so the choice kept diminishing. Combine that with the Hovensa situation and I'm guessing they will all be conservative about their ordering even as we approach season. Time to be super careful about expiration dates etc. (I noticed the eggland eggs at Plaza had a produced code showing they were about 6 or 7 weeks older than the standard store brand...).

I think they aren't doing very well. I've seen them down before and this is the worst. The little store next to them have fully stocked shelves and about the same prices. The gas station store next to Pearl B has fully stocked shelves and a little cheaper prices. Ziggys stays pretty well stocked and their prices are cheaper. Compared to those stores that are somewhat comparable they seem to have a problem. Maybe their overhead is higher.

tami you have been off island awhile! i feel schooner bay has been totally understocked for a LONG time, even before season ended....seems to me they are trying to run it more like a hardware/homegoods store than a market. i agree stop and save now has a better selection and the prices are no higher. today schooner bay had no chewing gum!!! even gas stations don't run out of gum.

That's true lily. Even before I left at the beginning of summer they were a bit sparse. I don't shop there much. Only milk, bread and produce when I don't want to drive all the way to the grocery store. I stopped shopping there when their milk and bread cost rose higher than ziggys and the gas station by Pearl B but I continued to go there for produce or occasionally for deli stuff. Now the produce is empty as well.

also going back to petco for kitty litter-shipping charges are lower than they had been.

I'm not sure what their strategy is at Schooner Bay Market but it certainly isn't convenience. I used to get my morning coffee there everyday but got tired of the indifference and mean-spirited attitude of the gals behind the back counter, not to mention the curiously regular lack of fresh milk at the coffee bar. I usually convenience shop at Stop n' Save and get my coffee at The Bisto now. I hope the folks at Schooner Bay Market step it up as they are good people and the store has a lot of potential if managed well.

I predict that eventually Schooner Bay will close and the owners will relocate their hardware store to that location.

I agree Dixie. More of a small supermarket with a deli, hot foods for lunch and dinner and a salad bar. Vicanuck, the employees there have always been super sweet to me but I have heard others complain but I have never had any problem. Linda J, hubby went into Gannets before we left for the summer and said it was a ghost town. With Home Depot and Gallows Bay Hardware I think they have less change of making it than Schooner Bay Market. I think Schooner Bay Market is needed on the east end and could be a really good thing. I only big grocery shop once a month and the market is a great place to pick up stuff between big shops. They used to be packed at lunch and dinner time with their hot to go food. We bought a rotissoire chicken about once a week. Great fresh baked breads and subs to go would always keep me coming back. They made big changes and got rid of all the stuff that kept people coming in. They brought in high dollar imported stuff which was nice but way too expensive. Now they don't have much of anything. Sad.

Boy, Linda J, I hope you're wrong, but I fear you may be right.

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss George and Cindy.

i agree with linda j. you cant have two failing businesses. so combine and have one that is failing.

glad to see stop and rob and tide village are getting some of SB customers, as long as they dont UP their prices i will shop there

I second buying from Walmart. Tho not a food item, we ordered a new vacuum cleaner (Hoover upright) and it was here in 2 days via US Mail. Cost me zero to have it mailed and it was cheaper than buying it on island.

Some is thru the mail, some stuff has come thru VI Cargo. We ordered canned goods (corn, beans, tomato sauce, spaghetti, etc.) and it came via VI Cargo. Don't know the rhyme or reason. Shipping canned goods thru VI Cargo ended up not being cheaper because of the shipping charges, but we tried it once to find out. Stuff they ship thru the mail IS cheaper with no postage being charged.

will try and get a little cow in suit case then.

def. going to shop walmart then. bringing back extra bags with stuff from dollar tree and dollar general. hopefully will only have to shop local stores for basics. sour milk, moldy bread, rotten veggies and fruits.
have been going twice a week to local farmers market....the veggies and home baked goods cheap and of course so fresh.

I never encountered sour milk or moldy bread soon after I bought it. I always check the expiration date and date on the bread/rolls, etc.

Milk did go sour once before the expiration date (about half was left of the gallon), so I called the company and they refunded my money. I never had a problem with that brand before that or since then, so that was a very unusual occurance.

I always refrigerate bread as soon as I get home from grocery shopping. Or freeze it. It doesn't get moldly that way and lasts longer.

When it comes to fruit & produce, I am very, very picky. If for some little reason something just doesn't look right, I don't buy.
