I am considering relocating to St.Thomas next fall. My one complication is that I have a child. He will be 8 years old and I am not familiar with the schooling system in the USVI. Do you have to pay tuition? Are the schools and curriculum comparable to the mainland? Are after school programs and services available? Are there any sites or reference materials on this subject?

Aside from the cost and logistics, is it your opinion that I would be depriving my child of a good education if we were to relocate to St. Thomas? The city I live in now is approximately the size and population of STT and is an average working class standard of living. I don't exactly think the school system is great here, but I don't want to put my child at a disadvantage because of where I choose to live. Any opinions on this subject?

Please note - I am by no means saying that STT doesn't have a good school system. I am from NY and it is generally known and accepted that the standards and testing in Northeast schools is higher than those in the South. I would be asking the same questions were I to relocate to Florida, Mississippi, or elsewhere.

Okay, perhaps I should say New York state specifically. We have Regents exams, strict testing standards, a high focus on magnet schools and specialized curriculum, etc. Many things that other states don't have and/or require. And, no, it's not only people in the Northeast that think this way. Sorry if anybody takes offense to my statement - it wasn't meant to be taken that way. I didn't say our schools were better, just that we have higher standards and more testing. Nobody ever said that we meet those standards or receive a better education because of the testing...

It always warms my heart to come on these forums for help and have people nitpick your every question. The purpose of this post wasn't to say one place is better than the other, just to set reasonable expectations and compare. There are pro's and con's in every situation. I think my child's education sits pretty high up on the list of things that are important in life and I should be able to ask questions unrestricted and get honest answers so that I am able to make the best possible decision.

There are lots of discussions about schools on this forum that you can search and read. There are free public schools in the USVI, and most (but not all!) say that the public schools are bad, and that you'll want to put your child in a private school. Read the discussions for lots more info.

Not everybody on this board will warm your heart. Feel free to ignore those who don't. Most of the active posters are here to help.

I hope you use the search function and begin reading some of the thousands of comments about education in the Virgin Islands. It is definitely a 'hot button' issue. After you have done your research and gotten thoroughly confused, come back and discuss your most important concerns. Good Luck ..The USVI is a wonderful place, but it has some downsides...

I am going to be starting work in the schools doing desktop maintenance on their computers......

All private schools & from what people have told me there are 2 top notch ones here, Antillas (sp) & damn me if I forgot the name of the other one. But, I was told that tuition is like $10,000 per year.
