School Enrollment Experience
Had my first experience with the system in STX. I went to about 3 buildings yesterday to get child into public school.
I came to the office with all our personal documents/school records, but was told to go the Clinic (Charles H?) to get a blue clearance form for immunizations. Done this in about 20 minutes.
The clerk at the Depart.Edu. Registration Building copied all the papers and I thought we would get a school assignment, but after I disclosed that my child had speech therapy back in the states. She stopped in her tracks, completed some letter and told me to go over to Special Services Building.
I took a breathe, went back to the car, and headed over about 3 buildings (again...where I originally started)
(By the way, we were driving)
Well, my child took speech therapy back in the states. I did not have the her Individual Educational Plan (IEP) describing her progress. I know, you are wondering why I am H-O-T-T
Because special services says that they will call me in 10 days...(perplexed, I ask why)....she said someone will call.
Why does my child have to be out of school for 10 days because of this particular (service) need?
You better believe it, I will be pulling names out of my hat and playing political with this. IMHO, this process can be streamlined into a easier process.

A&C Teacher,
Did you sign a consent form for the release of your child's records from her former school? I certainly hope that the folks at the office where you registered had you complete one. They can fax this permission to the school and the school can fax the IEP back. I'm a teacher who is in charge of new students to our school and we can place a child right away. The child might not get services right away, but will be in a class continuing her learning.

Well, since my last post, got a call. Someone at the second office (Special Services) took a "Look" at the enrollment form, phoned back to verify if my little one was special needs or just a particular service. Apparently, the first office I started at, jumped the gun or misunderstood my communication about the special services my little one received, and all she heard was "SPECIAL" Oh, my word- Lawd!
Anyway, I got somethings to follow up on and she will be in one of these schools come Tuesday. Will post my other findings in the process.
Thanks again for your information.
Oh sweetie that's nutting. Ask for a schedule or calendar and you might as well ask for the moon. 🙂 Honestly, if you can get thru the first year, you will find the rhythm and be okay. Persevere and get to know other parents of kids in your class. Between the two of you, information will be forthcoming.

What do you mean by "pulling names out of a hat and playing political"?
Read thebook Don't Stop the Carnival. That well tell you how it is down here.
What I meant was being vocal with all authorities who are in position regarding the educational system.
If you read back over previous threads, you will find lots of info about public schools versus private schools. You have experienced, first hand, why. If you are able to go to the appropriate authorities and make some positive changes, I applaud you. Obviously, join the PTA, and get involved with any opportunities available to you at your child's school. Parents here want the best for their children, like anywhere else. Maybe you will get some support, but please be sensitive to the "way things are done".
