Anyone else have any input? I've seen some posts here about people having unrealistic expectations for rent prices on the islands. And some other posts about not using Craigslist as a measuring stick as there are so many scams. So what I am looking for is an idea as to what is realistic on STX and STT for:

2bdrm
1 or more bath
Fenced yard for dog preferred but not necessary
View would be awesome but not necessary
Could be:
apt, condo, home or apt inside larger home

You can check Craig's List to get an idea of costs of rentals.
STT and STX are different and rents will probably be less on STX than STT but options for work and exploring St. John (a 20 min ferry or barge ride away) and other offshore cays and BVI are better on STT.
Just depends on what floats your boat

Just be aware of ads that offer heat, fireplaces, heated parking garages, basements, no outdoor pics, modern with designer finishes, stainless steel appliances and corian counter tops for $700.00.

Alana- Do you ever use heat there? Is that why it wouldn't be offered? Even in Florida we use the heat a couple months out of the year and usually see freezing temps at night a couple times a year.

Doubt they have AC included in rental amount.
Best not to rent sight unseen.
Pics can be different from reality plus is location good for where you'll be working.

Yes, definitely all to consider and which utilities are included is important when I consider the monthly rent. Right now I am just trying to guesstimate a monthly budget and will not rent unseen. When all is ready I will have short term rental to keep me going while I look for something permanent.

😮 No, no heat! I don't think I've ever seen a place with heat here. I was in Orlando area for a stint this last winter/spring and I froze me a$$ off. It's nothing like that here. The lowest I've ever personally seen the temps here is 68 and it was raining, the dead of night, in February. And that is not usual by any means. I used to think it was weird to see people in jeans and jackets when I first moved here, but now I get it. My blood is thin and I get cold if the temps drop below 75.

Don't wait long to check it out. Good rentals don't stay around long. Also, make sure it is a long-term rental, not just a few months. If they take pets, find out if they have restrictions. Good luck.

Thanks islandnewbie- I won't be moving for another ten months. Just looking at rental prices so I can get a feel for what to expect and create a loose monthly housing budget.

There is another scam indicator I have found on craigslist besides the heat thing. Even with pictures and rent that is only a tad low, as soon as the return post to your inquiry touches on something like missionary work or a pregnant daughter- some reason the owner can't actually be there, but don't worry financial arrangements can be made.... SCAM
