"[Sandy Point is] only open on the weekends, with the exception of April-August when it is closed entirely due to turtle nesting season."

I've read that - but It has no DATE.
on Trip advisor there were people talking about LATE april.
on some sites it makes it SEEM like April first... but I wonder if anyone actually knows for sure.

Sandy Point closes to the public around mid May. So the last weekend you can go will probably be the May 15th-16th.

But the turtles have started to arrive with about 12 nestings so far. The season really revs up around the beginning of April. So, when you go to Sandy Point, keep this in mind! Don't dig in the sand, don't stick sharp objects in the sand (umbrellas, sticks etc) that may harm turtle eggs and hatchlings!

Also, there may be a lot of scientific equipment out there this season so please please PLEASE do not touch or disturb any of it!!!! If you have any issues or see anything you are concerned about happening on the beach call:

WIMARCS: 340 772 1382
USFWS: 340 690 9452 or 773 4554.

Just curious... I can't remember the name of it, but on the first beach you walk across when going south from Point Udall (the beach with all the trash on it), there appear to be lots of turtle nesting areas. Why isn't that beach protected?

Turtles nest on almost all the beaches on STX. Sandy point is the only protected area. Local residents/hotels keep watch on the other
beaches and call the turtle people if there is a problem.

East End Bay is monitored as are Jack's and Isaac's Bays. It is owned by TNC which monitors it with help from various agencies.
