Sales tax on items purchased in mainland or Puerto Rico for shipping to USVI.
Looking to purchase furniture in either PR or FLA and shipping to STX. Does anyone know if I have to pay sales tax n the location where I purchase the items, even though they will not be used in that location and will be shipped to a location with no sales tax? Thanks so much. Lots to learn as we are new arrivals.
No.
Check with seller.
Doubt you can get out of paying local sales tax unless the seller ships directly to VI.
I've never paid sales tax.
Customs duties, yes.
Yes, you can avoid paying local sales in Florida and PR if the seller ships the items to the USVI's on your behalf.
If, however, you take the items with you when you leave the store (and ship them yourself) then you'll have to pay the sales tax. Just to clarify, YOU cannot take passion of the items in Florida, Puerto Rico or any other state in which a purchase is made. To avoid being assessed for state, territorial and local sales tax the seller must ship the goods outside an address that is outside the "tax area".
If a vendor does not have an international freight forwarder they work with regularly you can set up your own account with a "bonded" freight forwarder of your choice (there are many such companies in Florida and Puerto Rico) and have the seller deliver the items directly to them. They, in turn, will arrange for the items to be shipped to you in the USVI's.
Thank you all. Appreciate the help.
You're going to pay one way or the other.
If you buy in FL or PR you're going to pay local sales tax.
If you ship the items to the VI, you're going to pay duty and excise tax.
Six of one or half a dozen of the other.
