safety at the beach

I'm moving to st. john in 29 days-and am veryyy excited! But I've been wondering about how safe it is for a 22yr old girl to "explore" the beaches (secluded and non secluded) by herself, as I will be living by myself. I'm not talking about swimming- I'm a outstanding swimmer-have taught lessons for the past 3 summers...but i mean with the locals, and other people around.....would it be safe if say it was just myself and a couple of local men? Can I leave my bag/purse on the beach, and know that it will not be messed with while I am in the ocean?

Any other words of advice about living by myself over there would be very much appreciated!!

thanks!

I have been to the beaches by myself on St. John, just be cautious. Make sure there are others somewhere around. And like anywhere do not leave anything valuable unattended, why would you take anything valuable to the beach anyway?

I was in STT/STJ this past summer with my girlfriend and I had to stop more than one "questionable" advances on her, however all of those were in town, and we encountered no problems at the beaches.
We are 18 in case you were wondering.

It is easy enough to meet some single people to hang out with. I strongly suggest going to the beaches and around with someone else. Don't take anything valuable to the beach. Just a towel, sunblock, sunglasses, and a new friend.

Use common sense. Personally I would not go to any deserted beach alone on stx, you're just asking for trouble. Stay on the popular beaches that are well attended until you get a feel for things. Make some friends and find out the scoop. If you're asking questions like should you leave valuables unattended on the beach I really dont think you're ready to leave mom and dad yet.

Joyyrider7, just use basic common sense. Go to the more frequented beaches where there are lots of people and then gently segue into the lesser-frequented beaches and so on down the line. As Teresa said, there is no reason whatsoever to take anything valuable to the beach. You can easily obtain a little waterproof container which will hold some bills and your car keys or whatever else which you can wear around your neck while swimming or snorkelling.

May your stay on STJ be enjoyable. I'd guess that this isn't a lifetime move for you but a chance to explore and experience something different, Have you really explored this forum? If you haven't, you should do so. There are moving stories on file, all sorts of general information and a search engine which will answer many questions. Cheers and happy reading!

I go to the beach by myself on STX all the time. But I am selective and would never stay on a secluded beach where I would be alone. I prefer to have other people, preferably couples, on the beach. And, even if you are a good swimmer, be careful about swimming/snorkeling alone. None of the beaches on STX have life guards.

Crammer Park on STX east end does have a life guard. I don't know what his schedule is, but if you try to beach your kayak he will promptly tell you only do so in the boat landing area.

Gotcha Joyrider7.....by bag/purse in your post you really mean " bag" with nothing valuable in it. And you were worried about it being messed with why? But in truth if you leave anything unattended there is always a chance it can be stolen anytime anywhere. If you are on a beach where tourists regularly hang out the chances go up. I stand by my post, use common sense if someone steals your keys how are you going to drive your car or get into your home? Dont leave anything unattended you dont want stolen.

I had an entire sofa stolen from me right before my very eyes.......so take that for whatever it's worth.
And if you've been teaching swimming lessons you should definitely know it's a no no to swim alone.

I'm moving to STJ late may - I'm 21 by the way, perhaps we can meet up? - I'd love having someone to hang out with, it sorta sucked last time I was there because I didn't have anyone to hang out at the beach with- would love to have a snorkeling buddy!

Let me know, we can exchange info... though I have no idea what my new phone number will be lol - I can give you my BF's.
