So in our searches for places to live I was wondering if anyone can give me any areas that I should stay away from on St. Thomas, I/e. Are there "unsafe" parts of the Island that have higher crime? Anyone know anything about Red Hook or Anchorage Condos?

thanks! Hilary

Hello Hilary,

The condos at Anchorage are in a good area.

Areas that are considered "unsafe" are often known for drug related activities and are often in low income residential areas. Some of these areas however have a good section and a bad section. In general some areas of town are not to safe, some areas of Hospital Ground, Bovoni, Contant, Long Bay... and in all these areas there are also good parts.

When you visit these potential places to live that you are considering you will be able to tell. If you are not visiting them first hand and using an agent your real esate agent will be able to adequately describe what the area around the property is like. If you come accross other area names feel free to ask for opinions on it.

Islander,

My wife and I are looking to visit soon, as I've stated in earlier posts, and am curious as to area we might want to avoid. I understand to know the island, we have to experience the island as a whole, but I'd like to have a heads up of areas known for trouble or crime. Here in the states, near Detroit, it's easy to tell people the surrounding area's and how well they fair in drugs and crime. Are there known area's that prey upon visitors and tourists that can be avoided? Or is it just a hit or miss kind of thing?
Since we're visiting soon, how are the taxi's? Do they tend to raise their prices to pick the visiting pocket?

Why not consider the positive side of this question and ask where some really great neighborhoods or special areas are located?

It was not that hard for me when I first rented a car and had like one day - literally one day, to drive around and find a place - I was very lucky. But in doing the drive round, I had several places to visit, and once in the area of the apt, knew that it was - not near enough to the water, looked a little - this or that.

It really is not hard to tell once you're here. Just like driving through Detroit or where I'm from, Chicago or LA where I lived for 10 years.

Whatever your lifestyle, will more than likely answer the question about where you live, and we won't need to tell you where to stay away from.

Paul -
I in no way meant for a negative tone to come across in my post! We are moving with young children and if at all possible would like to secure a place so we would not have to stay in a hotel while we check out the Island for a place to live. It is going to be a lot of transition going on and we would hope to try to cut some of it down - again - if we can. My question is coming from a stateside perspective, I know, but that's all I have to go by. Really, I am trying to learn! When you've lived in unsafe city neighborhoods with kids, you just don't want to do it again!

We have not made our pre-visit yet so I know a lot of my questions will be answered by that. I just thought these boards could give me some clues to start me off. And you're right, I'm sure I'll be able to get some indication of the neighborhood when I can see it for myself. I've also contacted the school to get some ideas.

thanks
Hilary
