Hi,

My boyfriend and I are thinking about relocating to either St. Croix or St. Thomas. I had a quick question about the safety on the islands. I only ask because recently my sister mentioned that its not the safesty place, and that "she'd never go anywhere alone in St. Croix" when she was there visiting her friend. I'm not sure if this was only to persuade me against moving, or if she really did have a valid point. So, I thought I'd get the scoop from the people that know the islands best. I'll be there in a month for vacation, but with any place, I'm sure vacation there is not the same as living there.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Dear NeedSomeSun,

You question falls under "FAQs" (Frequently Asked Questions) and so you should research this site right now to have your questions answered. You can google onto "CRIME" and I know you'll come up with a plethora of threads which will put you in touch with the news on both STT and STX crimes.

Since you've already planned a visit to the islands (you didn't say which island) then, apart from the vacation, endeavour to get out and about and use the vacation experience as a PMV (pre-move visit) to do personal research. Good luck!

It may be slightly politically incorrect for me to say this, but some (white) people are simply uncomfortable being a minority and are fearful without cause. And some people are fearful of poverty (can't explain that one). And some people are just plain uncomfortable with different cultures (you know, the folks who don't like France because it's full of French people and you can't understand them). I'm not saying any of these are the case with your sister, just some things to take into account.

I had a colleague at work who vowed never to return to STX because she never once felt safe, but couldn't/wouldn't say why. Me? I probably have made an equal number of white and West Indian friends that I communicate with regularly from the states. It just never occured to me that the majority of folks on island would be anything other than hardworking people, like me, so it was a jolt to me that some people have this reaction.

Now, this is not to say that you can go anywhere and be as safe and carefree (careless?) as you would at Disney World, but I practice the same common sense that I use at home and have never had anything resembling a problem.
