RV/5th wheel hook ups?
This may be silly, but I have to ask! If we were to come to STT with a 5th wheel RV, are there any places to rent a spot to hook it up with electricity, water, telephone ect? I understand that water may still have to be delivered or the such. But is there such a thing as and RV park or trailer homer park? Thanks a lot for any information!
I havent seen an RV since ive been on the islands much less an RV park.
How in the heck would you get it here????
you might find a trailer park though.
Hello Kaliek,
There are no RV parks. There are people who purchase trailor-type homes and build cement slabs and put the trailor on as a residence. Water is often stored in large containers, or some people build cement cisterns in the foundation with the intension of building a cement or wood home when finaces allow them to. In any case these people get electricity and telephone run to their trailors in the same way I suppose a hosue does, a meter is installed and hooked upto the trailor. Not sure how the RV would work. Not sure its a good idea for the VI.

Thanks a lot for the info! We had thought about shipping it much the same as shipping a car. Islander, you stated you are not sure its a good idea for the VI, would that be because of hurricains and the such? Or is it just such an odd idea, lol. I appreciate both your honest answers, it was just an idea that we had tossed around. Overall, I am getting then that it is probably not a good idea, thanks for the help.
Kailek: I would think that you would not be able to drive an RV around due to the hills and narrow roads, so that leaves you parking it somewhere. Why? Get a nice apartment and bring or buy a small car!!
Our intent was bring the 5th wheel and find a place to park it and leave it at all times, not to use it to travel once on the island. We wanted to leave parked at all times and use it as a residence. We were then going to use the truck we have that pulled it as our vehicle. Is it that the 5th wheel might look kinds "cheap" if that is the case, by no means would we want to do that. It was just one of the many ideas we had. Our plan is to purchase a place in a few years, but thought that this may be a good idea to start out if there was a place to park it. Again, thanks for all the info, keep it coming.
Here is why I didnt think it was a good idea. Depending on where on the island you wanted to live. Say you wanted to live in one of the "really nice" neighborhoods like Frenchmans Bay - owners of other properties around you would be uphauled to see a trailor type home among there big houses. That said if you were going to buy a piece of land in that area to put the trailor then you might have well bought land/house in another less expensive area. Say you bought land somewhere in Northside - I am pretty certain the residents around you again would be upset and call zoning to report it. Not many people in these areas buy trailors. I recall in the northside WIntberg area a person who built a nice cement foundation and put a trailor on it, plants around, painted it nice and it looked ok - some residents still will a bit irate - the trailor did stay - hurricane blew it clean away though. Then some folks buy land and they put small shack like huts on them while they save monies to build a cement house. Again in many areas residents dont like it. Because the land here is so hilly, if a house is up on the hill and a property owner lower down puts up a trailor - it really is an eye sore. Having before mentioned that there are trailors already here that people use as homes; some are in Sugar Estate - they were used as temporary housing after a hurricane and were just never taken down and have become permenant, just a couple there. Then there was another temporary trailor housing area I believe it was somewhere in East End, cant quite recall - and the government was going to leave it there since they were not sure where to move the people living in them - residents of the area protested that it was temporary and needed to go - and it did. Some of the trailors were sold to residents who subsiquently put them up elsewhere. You will find many in Bovoni area, some in new development lots in Lynquist area, I think there are a couple in Frenchtown. Overall why I think its not a good idea - you would need to buy a piece of land to put it on. In some areas of the island the residents around you will be sour about the RV being there. In areas where there are already trailors - so you might blend in better - those areas well some aren't the best areas of the island. However there are trailors there, so it is something you can look into.
If you really want to find out if you can do it - you would need to come down for a long vacation, look into buying property, find out the zoning and if they would allow a RV to be there as a residence. Or you might do it in reverse order - contact some real estate agents and ask whether there are restrictions based on the residential zoning of land plots in the VI against putting trailors or RVs on them, and what areas that would be OK in if any? See if there are land plots for lease rather then having to buy it? Really need to investigate this - if you moved here with the RV I am pretty sure it would be hard thing to sell -- not a big market for road trips in the VI.

Islander-
Thanks again for giving me your honest opinions. That is why this forum is great! It is strictly an idea we were tossing around. We do not even own a trailer, we were just curious as to if we could do this or not. I totaly understand about the neighbors, it would be much the same here if that happened in our neighborhood. We are not planning to move until September and also are coming done for an extended vacation in June to do much of the research you always recommend. Our main plan was to use it for temporary housing until we decided where we wanted to build/buy. We by no means were set with this idea. We just wanted to ask and get opinions so that is awesome that you have provided us with them. I have also been in contact with short term places to rent, via earlier questions on this board, they have been very receptive even with the fact they we are relocating with dogs. Again, thanks a lot for the answers.
Thats great Kailek that you will come down and check things out. Plan out what you need to do during your research vacation... real estate agents, apartments, jobs... so that you can utilize the time you have on island and make your September move as smooth as possiable. Good Luck!! Glad we coudl help!! 🙂
