Roadway Construction & maintenance
Hi, new to the forum.
I'm currently a young college grad looking to find some place different to live (probably not forever as I like change). With this my field is in highway and roadway design construction and maintenance. I hold a civil engineering degree and EIT certification, not a full PE yet.
A few questions if anyone can answer, I know statistically theres very very few civil engineers on the islands.
1. What company or government department does the road construction.
I thought it was the public works department, however they don't appear to have a web page, so I'm a little lost here.
2. Are there many engineering firms on the islands that would have an opportunity.
I know a lot of Florida firms are contracted to do a lot of Caribbean work, however I'm wondering on the islands themselves if there are companies who do this kind of work. I'm also certified to do building construction beyond just road construction and designs.
3. Whats pay like for engineers.
I'm aware incomes are lower, just wondering how engineers fit into it as the pay level is more or less the same throughout the whole US for the most part.
4. Is there a lot of construction and development going on.
This one I'm clueless on. I don't know if companies are developing the islands... or if they are basically at the extent of development.
5.Are there engineering licenses on the virgin islands?
On the VI government pages engineering was not listed as even requiring a license, however surveying was which generally goes hand in hand with engineering.
Well, those are the questions I have, its painfully hard to find answers on these and I've been doing a lot of research however it has all been over the internet due to my current location (Iowa). Any info is greatly appreciated.
Try Island Roads - company out near Turpentine Run. They get most of the local contracts.
