My husband and I are going to Puerto Rico in a couple of weeks. We're just going for a few days to relax, shop and EAT!

Since we will only be there for a few days, we are asking experienced travelers for help...

-We are dying to eat good Mexican and Italian food - any restaurant recommendations?
-Any "must do" activities for the first time Puerto Rico visitor?

Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

Good Morning,

Well, it depends, of course, on which part of the island you are staying, if east then I like the Rain Forest, and a trip over to Culebra, if out west the caves at Camuy are really neat.

I like all of the food in PR 🙂

Regards,
Dante

Lolita's for Mexican. It's about halfway between San Juan and Fajardo, maybe closer to Fajardo. You may have to stand in line.

Augusto's in the Marriott Courtyard, Marimar in San Juan, a bit pricey, but elegant. Also, I love the little bistro in the same hotel. Can't think of the name.

Actually many places I could walk to but can't think of the names. There is a rooftop restaurant in Old San Juan that is fabulous. It is part of a boutique type hotel. I will put my thinking cap on.

As other people start answering you, I can tell I am going to get antsy for a trip to San Juan. Thanks a lot!:P

Plaza las Americas is the biggest mall on the island and usually about a $12 cab ride from downtown San Juan. Great big movie theather there and most of the movies are in english. A borders and lots of shopping! Parrot Club is a great restaurant downtown that serves Caribbean fusion type food in downtown. Also downtown there are outlet coach, ralph lauren, burberry, etc..

We go all the time for weekend trips to get off the little rock and so far the new Marriott La Concha is our favorite place. The rooms are very large with all new modern furniture, large plasmas and big bathrooms by Puerto Rico hotel standards.

Have fun.

The first time I was in Plaza Las Americas, I had a panic attack. We had been sailing for 6 months, and I had kind of lost the connection with hustle and bustle. However, I have adjusted well! Check out the Godiva Chocolate store for a latte type drink. OMG!!!

For local, local, cuisine, try Los Pinos on Ponce de Leon, also in Marimar. I'm still trying to recall the name of the place with the best mofongo on earth.

A cute hotel option is At Wind Chimes, in the Condado area. We have always like the Condado Plaza because of the location. The rooms can be a little iffy, but if you don't like it, they will move you to another, nicer room. The location is great. But usually, we stay at the Marriott Courtyard because I can walk to Marshall's and my husband can walk or take a short cab ride to the casinos.
I've never stayed there, but if you want something a little upscale and different, I have heard great things about El Convento in Old San Juan.

Actually, just realized you didn't ask about hotels. Where are you staying?

Thanks so far for the responses.

We are staying at Tres Palmas Inn in San Juan and are renting a car, so we can venture out a bit. Yes, we are going to the Plazas Las Americanas to do some shopping. I'm sure I'll just stand there with my mouth wide open for a bit.

Any other suggestion are greatly appreciated!

There is a restaurant in Old San Juan that I had read about in a travel magazine where the chef comes out and talks to you and then picks the menu for you and puts together all kinds of aphrodisiac food 🙂

It is called Ostra Cosa - not cheap - but supposedly very good

We never made it there last time we visited but it is on our "to do" list. Let me know if you go there 🙂

Happy shopping - you will LOVE the mall.

Pia

I was trying to think of that name. It has a big reputation but is really a very simple patio restaurant near El Convento and all the outlet shops. Excellent food. The large prawns are to die for. Its cheaper then our expensive restaurants. More in the 15 to 25 price range. The service is excellent as well. I always go over there when I'm shoppin.
