I am applying for a federal job on St. Thomas and was wondering what the rents are like for a furnished 1-2 bedroom apartment. Nothing fancy, but not in a crappy area either. I am not aware of the neighborhoods having never been on the island. any help is appreciated. Thanks, Morgan

Actually if you happen to know where the USDA office is, housing in that area would be helpful. i myself am not sure where the office is.

The United States Dept. of Agriculture.... well that would either be in the federal building in Charlotte Amalie... right on the waterfront area... or at the Airport if its an officer/inspector job you will have.

Rents for what you described might run between $600-900... give or take depending on furnishings, view, location, size....

If you got something in Mafolie area... then your work if at the federal bld. would be basically a straight shot down Mafolie Hill... if you have a car which is suggested you could go further into northside which will still be fairly close. If at the airport maybe something in Contant or passed the university - again would need a car, although public bus service operates in the Contant and university area....

Thanks very much for the info. The prices sound like less than I had thought they would be, although I realize you are estimating. I think it would be in the Charlotte Amalie Bldg.
How would I fair with a bicycle instead of a car? I would not be planning to bring my own car, assuming that the USDA would supply a car for the employees, as it is here where I work now in NY for the USDA. Of course I'll check this all out more thouroughly if actually offered the position, it's not a sure thing yet.

Thanks again.

Morgan, you would only do well with a bike if you found something in town - which is not likely for a long term place - short term yes there is a good one. Otherwise its uphill from town to anywhere so bike would be difficult and you would definately be drenched in sweat after getting to work because of the inclines and the heat.

The apt. were estimates from small to med. places... if you got something that was larger, view, ac... it could run you 1200-1500... it all depends on what you are looking for and like and what the apartment was like.
