Renting to small dog owner

I will be taking a travel RN assignment this summer and am looking for a 1 bedroom/bath condo to rent that will take a small dog. The agency I'm working with will pay up to $1500/month depending on the unit. I'm looking at a 3 to 6 month assignment. The dog is three years old, 14 pounds and neutered. (and of course, house broken).
I know the island fairly well so please include areas if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

You might want to post your request (including which island) on the Classified board here as well as check out the listings there.

On St Thomas, I don't know of any condos that allow renters to have dogs. You may need to rent an apartment in a private house, where there is more leeway.

I'm sorry, I'm talking about living on St. Thomas. Thanks to all of you for your input.

Hi Linda,

I have a small dog and we rent a house through Ellick Real Estate. 340-775-1155

We are very happy with them. It would be worth it to give them a call and see what other properties they have available. The woman's name at the office is Jackie.

Hope this helps.

I know of 2 condo associations & maybe 3 that do rent to people with small pets but they're few & far between as EE said. You will probably have better luck with an apartment attached to a house & it is easier to find rentals that allow pets than it used to be. Too many irresponsible pet owners ruined it for the rest of us for a really long time.

Thanks guys, this is a bit harder than I realized. I've put out some feelers on the VRBO.com site and the classified board here. Still have 9 months so I'm hopeful something will turn up. Silly that so much hinges on a little dog but I just can't go without him. My best to you both.

Linda and Lexi,
It really is way too soon to find a place for June. Are either of you doing a PMV? I suggest you use the next 6 months learning more about which neighborhoods sound good to you, are close to work and other interests, etc. Then around April, start getting serious. In the meantime, read the Island Trader ads online and the ads here, and you can get a feel for what you get for how much. Of course, you never know what you're getting until you actually see it.

It is so hard to do this off island, and I know you are anxious. You might want to secure temporary housing, and then take a month or two to find a permanent place. Places that rent short term, often do book further in advance, like Villa Fairview and a few others.

You're right Jaunita, it is pretty early, June being nine months away, but I'd like to know what I'm up against. I've actually spent a little time on the island, always vaction, but I know my way around and have rented cars, shopped the food stores, used the gas stations, watering holes, and all that. I have a timeshare and try to make it to STT every few months. I know it's not the same as living there but I'm probably a little more aware then some. I also read the reloaction and vacation boards religiously, recognize many of the posters names and have even met a few. This is truly a great forum and I'm so happy to have found it. Thanks for your input and maybe we'll run into each other after I make this move.

I just sent you a private message, read the previous messages and you'll find a website that has been really helpful. VRBO.com.
