We will be moving to USVI this Fall.

As we research our options, I am wondering if certain amenities can be assumed based on price range or location. For instance, will any rental apartments include a washer/dryer? What about a dishwasher?

We are moving from Washington, DC where such things are considered absolutely essential to this over-indulgant populace!

If someone could provide a very rough sense of what you get for what amount of money and on which island...that would be great. Otherwise, I will just pack my dishgloves and clothing pins!

THanks!

Chances are between slim an none, and slim left town, that an apartment would have either of those! Too much water. Maybe the complex would have a laundry room. Check the moving guide at the top of this page for more info.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones...I have a washing machine and dryer! I think the landlord was cool with providing the washer b/c we are on a separate cistern, so if we run out of water we are responsible for buying it. I have seen many apartments with W/D, but to be honest, no dishwashers. If you are in a condo, the likelihood for both W/D and dishwasher is greater.
Good luck!
P.S. IMHO, I think hurricane shutters and/or a generator are amenities I think you might appreciate more than a dishwasher.

You asked if amenities could be assumed...the quick answer is "no". I have heard of people looking at apartments without such "amenties" as a fridge, a stove, etc. You are going to want to look at each property you see offered! You CAN get W/D and dishwasher (and central air), however you will probably get charged about a nickle a gallon for water. Even in these modern days with desal plants and potable water in pipes, water is still scarce. Each rental agreement is different- ask when you are looking around. BTW, I once had a unit with a dishwasher and used it mainly to drain the hand washed dishes!!

I know about 3 people who had/have dishwashers in their homes (not apartments, in the home they owned). I don't know any apartments that had them. Washer and dryer - really depends but I lean toward no if its a shared cistern... because of water usage/cost concerns. But certainly you can look for an apartment with both (one the folks with the dishwasher bought a new house and subsequently rented their previous house - it is 4 bedroom, pool, ocean view, private, 2 bath, glass all around living room, open doors to balcony and ocean.... $$$$, so they exisit, few in number and high in price often times) - if you are willing to pay the price tag as it will more then likely be high for these amenities as they might be in luxary type places. If you have your own cistern and are responsiable for the water buying then you probally can get a washer/dryer because the buying of water will be your bill and job.

Evenin' ! ,

I am considering moving to the islands within the next year after finishing school. So many of my questions have been answered just browsing thru everyone's comments on the board. You couldn't ask for a better source of info, very much appreciated. Of all the questions I want to ask this one came to me first:
What is the deal with the disposal of garbage and waste? Kind of out of context but was just a little curious.

Much Respect,

Adam
