rent- goff cart?

*Hi, I am coming to the St. Thomas for a 3 month period to work at the hospital.

My question is, can you find scooters to rent by the week, or month?

Or can you rent a goff cart easier?

My company is giving me just so much for a rental and it covers only half of what a car rents for.

I also heard the bus system is a bit inconvienent. Is this true?

I would rather have something that I can get on and go on a whim.

Thanks for any information you can tell me.

Yes you can rent scooters. Try Tropical Scooter 340-714-7408

No golf carts to get around St. Thomas, the roads are for cars, trucks.... Only place you will find golf carts is at the Golf Course.

If your company is paying half a car rental, you could get in contact with say Budget Car Rental and get one of the littler cars, nothing fancy (no auto locks, or CD players...) and see if you can get a special rate for renting for 3 months. That would be most convienent, if it rains you will be soaked in a Scooter, or if you want to go out at night a Car is a better bet.

The Bus System is not convient - particularly for visitors and that is why you may have read that on this board or others. For locals or residents who learn the bus route and its problems then you can sort of figure out how to make it work for you - but it is not 100% reliable. But it works for some part - learn how to use it and how to use the $1 taxis and then you can sort of count on one or the other working for you when you need to get to destainations they run routes through.

See about a discount on extended car rental. Call the office here directly and perhaps speak to a manager if the regular agents can't seem to help. If you are coming during slow season (June-October of there abouts I would think they would work something out with you. If you are coming during season Dec-April they might be more reluctant as it is easier to get their cars all rented during that time.

Let us know how working in the islands works out.

Cindy: Please do not think of renting a scooter. We have no neurosurgeon for simple burr holes and suchness. No golf carts either. Speak to other travelers from your company. There is a thriving business of renting cars to travelers which is covered by the allowance.

Thanks for all the replys. I would love to have a car if my allowance allows. It would be so much better!

This is my first assignment with this company. I have been traveling for 2 years now but never to the Islands. This will be new to me and I am very excited about coming!!

I am looking forward to sharing my experience with others . As soon as I settle in, I will be sure to write.

Cindy,

Do check with Budget, the number is (800) 626-4516 see about getting a 2 door car, least price one they have and ask for a special rate for extended rental. Summer is part of low season in terms of tourism so I am pretty confident you should be able to get a good price.

Also learn the dollar bus route, it is not so tricky once you learn it, doesn't take long. However if you are living out in the Northside or in areas where buses don't go you will still have a bit of a problem.

Do you know where you will be staying??
