removing genip stain

Ok, I'm dumb. What is genip??? I guess this is another dumb tourist question. LOL

Tide's got that new stick thing-y that supposedly removes everything...now, whether it has made it's way to the islands is quite another story, I'm sure....

Genips are small fruits that grow in clusters on trees here in the Virgin Islands. They look a little like miniature limes. Under the skin is some pulpy, juicy stuff attached to a big seed. You bite the skin, squeeze the fruit/seed into your mouth, and suck off the slimy gunk around the seed, spit out the seed. Tastes better than it sounds 🙂 Guess you could also collect the juice/pulp for various recipes. Kinda citrus-y, sweet/sour.

Yes, the juice can stain your clothes if you're sloppy but that's usually not a problem because the genips aren't bursting with juice which splatters so I find it hard to understand how it gets onto clothes. Guss I just learned something! If you swallow both the minimal juice and the fibers which surround the pit then you'll be intestinally bunged up for a while.

The deal is that you crack the outer skin with your teeth, sturp out and then suck on the pit and then spit out the fibers. Not too difficullt or complicated. Cheers!

Jules - If you wash the genip juice out immediately after it happens, before it sets into the fibers there is hope for getting it out. Other than that I don't know of any tricks.

STT Resident, you have indeed learnt something, I have had the juice drip when biting off the skin just a little too hard and getting the flesh at the same - not usual but it happens.

Terry - Its hard to explain the taste, its sweet but has a tang to it. The comments from those I've had try it for the first time is a mixture of "ehhh the texture is interesting-different-slimy" and "it taste ok-refreshing-good" and I remember one person said the texture and taste was gross.

Terry - genips are perfect for getting the salt out of your mouth after snorkeling. Pop a couple of in (one at a time) and the salt from the water is out of your mouth. I think they taste like sweet tarts. JMHO. 🙂 as for getting off the topic of removing the stain, sorry. I don't know how to get the stain out either.

Taste one! When they're fruiting, they are usually plentiful, so a taste is not a waste.

For stain removal, try soaking it for up to 6 hours in OxyClean. The stuff works great. That's my general advice. I never tried it on a genip stain.

Hello All,

Use Clorox Bleach Pen as a pre treater for washing. It has taken out every stain I have (three kids make a lot of stains), but only works on whites. I bought it at K-mart. Tide to Go pen is not a pre treater, but does 'mostly' remove the stain. It works if you use it right away. Sea Chest has some rust stain remover. If you have a rust stain, bleach will actually make the stain worse. Genips I think wouldn't make a rust stain so try the bleach pen. Good luck!
