Relocation Trends
I dont know if this was true but while I was in St. Thomas and St. John, I was naturaly interested in relocated and spoke to a local about it. This may be a myth but he told me that what state you live in has some affect on which island your attracted to. He told me that people from the northeast are most attracted to St. Thomas which is understandable because of its busy feel, and he also told me that Southern/Midwest are attracted to St. Croix, and that people from the West are mostly attracted to St. Thomas
From Chicago, would live on St.John in a heartbeat, but love where I am on St.Thomas.
St. Croix NEVER!
Well i am from New York and I would love to live on St. Thomas but not St. Croix
What's wrong with St. Croix? I've only been to St. Thomas but am interested in St. Croix.
yes please what is wrong with st croix? Tell us.
I'm from Kentucky and live on St. Croix. Maybe you're on to something. I thought St. Thomas was busy and touristy. I'll move to St. John when I win the lottery, the BIG lottery.
In terms of this discussion - Nothing is wrong with any of the islands... just what people prefer! 🙂 some people find one island too slow or too busy or too flat or not enough too do - depends on the person. As for the topic - interesting point of where in the states you are from drawing you to a particular island, depends on what you are looking for in the place.

Just feel like adding my two cents....initially we were looking at St. Croix (from Michigan) but have decided to move to St. Thomas. The reason for that being we feel we can get the best of both worlds living there. St. Thomas has the big city feel, but it is a short trip to St. John where you get the "raw nature" and un-populated feel.
Too many midwesterners??? haha

What about the reverse?
I.e., does which island you lived on influence where you settle in the U.S.?
I grew up on St. Thomas and spent about 20 years there. Since then I've lived in California, West Virgina (one semester of college is all I could stand), and am currenly living in Orlando (18 years).
Personally though, I like the west coast of Florida much better than the east coast. The gulf beaches remind me more of the V.I. than the atlantic beaches.
Im sorry if I offended St. Croix lol, I didnt mean that I dont like St. Croix, its just that being from NY I have grown up with that busy built up life and living in St. Croix is a too slow paced for me. But I do think there may be some trends as what island you choose. I have been to St. Croix and it does remiend me of a small town in somewhere like Alabama while St. Thomas has that city feel.
Richard,
A lot of locals move to states where they know someone or have family - particularly when going to college... not always but in many cases. I know of quite a few Virgin Islanders that moved to Miami and Orlando, Florida, Atalanta Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and New York but there are others elsewhere - California, Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Carolina, Massachusetts to name others.
