Relocation Questions
These boards are great. I've found an answer to just about every question that I have about moving, cost of living, etc. The following may be covered elsewhere here but I didn't come across it.
First, is the internet all WiFi and Sattelite? I would require a hard wired cable speed connection for my home based business. (Download at least 5 megabits/sec and upload at least 0.5 megabits/sec)
Second, I have a 4x4 Dodge Truck that I was going to sell before moving but I'm seeing where a 4x4 would be in high demand and that buying one there would be expensive. How much would it cost to ship and get my truck through customs (and if anyone has the time please explain why in a US territory there are customs fees from the states at all)
Third, I see that Sprint cell service works best. I use Boost which uses the Sprint network. Is anyone else using a 3rd party carrier that piggybacks on Sprint (Boost, Cricket, etc)?
The best way to gauge the overall cost of living (for me anyway) is to find out what a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs and a gallon of gas costs. So, what is the going rate for these three things.
Thanks for your time in answering.
1/2 gallon nonfat milk= $4.69
dozen large eggs= $2.69
gallon of gas= $3.93 marine, $3.50ish for the car.
These are on St Thomas.
Sprint does not necessarily work best. AT&T works best for me.;)
Just as a matter of my humble opinion...any time some one says "I require" about physical things, I recommend that they be extra careful in planning a move. Things rarely are absolute in the Caribbean.
Internet providers to USVI can be dial up, (Pennswoods or Earthlink) DSL (Innovative) Broadband VI, or Satillite. Satillite is expensive, Broadband VI is used by a lot of people (personal & business) & has a web site at: http://www.broadband.vi/.
The USVI even is a territory of the United States, it is not a state. Therefore clearing customs is part of the deal. If you travel here you can get in but to get back out, must clear customs before getting on the plane. If you ship a vehicle here you must have it clear customs at destination port. You pay a 1 time excise tax fee which if I remember correctly is about 5% of the vehicle value. You also must pay a 1 time road tax which is based on the weight of the vehicle. Any number of shippers bring vehicles here from the states. V I Cargo, Tropical Shipping, and Crowley Liner Services are the main 3. Each of these have web sites or have toll free numbers to call for a quote. So you have 2 fees that are payable here once your vehicle arrives and you have the cost of shipping. Getting your 4x4 Dodge here might end up costing around $2500 or more. (That is just my off the top guess). We shipped a 1999 Subaru from Florida via Crowley in Jan '07 and our ship fee was $1061, the exicise tax fee was about $450 and road tax was about $450. Total was around $2000.
I don't use Sprint; don't think it's the best cell . I still favor AT & T. I ditched T-Mobile a couple years ago when AT &T dropped them here in the USVI. I don't know anything else concerning a 3rd party carrier. I know Veriozon is useless here unless you want to pay big time roaming charges,
Groceriy prices vary depending on which store you go to -- Plaza Extra (2 stores), Pueblo (2 stores), Food Town, or Schooner Bay. Most things are more expensive here vs stateside except for tobacco and alchohol. For example right now, a gallon of milk at the cheapest place is about $5..49/gallon. Gasoline currently is anywhere between $2.55 and $2.85/gallon for regular unleaded.
Hope this helps you.

"Download at least 5mbps"
Good luck with that!
Thanks for all the replies...it all helps a great deal.
I use Broadband VI for Internet. Just under $50/month. Excellent service.
I think that any property worth its while has internet service or wireless capability. The prices you got are about right. The real issue is the cost of an apartment (about 1400 - 1600 for apartment you would like to stay in. Electricity is about 100 to 200. Water is about 40.
If you go to St. Croix the cost of living will be less.

For $100/month you can get 1 megabit/sec download, but it is only available wireless. 2 megabits/sec is $1200/month, also wireless. Up to 45 megabits/sec is available, but cost prohibitive and would still be wireless. Hard wired options exist, but are even slower.
