Relocation...FOREVER
I have been visiting the USVI for many years and have been impressed with the way of life there. Not always relaxed but very different from the mainland US. My plans are to take an early retirement and make the move. My question would be how new residents are treated by the locals as I have only been a visitor or tourist as some call it. I have heard that mainlanders are frowned upon by some as we may be seen as invading the island. This has been told to me more then once. Is it true?
One other question is the water situation. How exactly is water stored under a house and will it last? What should I look for in a home?
Thanks
Joseph: Re: how newcomers are treated...I think it depends on the newcomer. Virgin Islanders are very accustomed to seeing new faces, and very accustomed to them leaving in 3-6 months. If you treat them with respect, try to follow the local customs and go gently through your rounds, you will be accepted. If you are loud and obnoxious, or if you tend to tell everyone "that's not the way we do that in Iowa!", you will find the going a little tougher. Re: how long water lasts...it depends how much you use!! 😉 Ms. Chuy had a good explanation on the USVI News forum. The things I would look for in a home is convenience and hurricane resistance! You might want to rent for 6 months to give yourself time to figure out where you want to live- a lot will depend on your lifestyle! Good luck!
My wife and I have been exploring a semi-retirement home. We've looked at several islands. We just came back week before last from St Croix. We plan to move there next summer. It has just about everything we have been looking for. When we told the local folk we were thinking about moving there, they were helpful, informative and very friendly. We talked to a lot of people of all different ages and ethic groups. I was very impressed by them. Like one of the other posters said, treat them with respect and they'll treat you with respect. We can't wait.
I envy you and your wife. We've got another 7 1/2 years but who is counting.
