I have a couple of questions for anyone in the virgin islands, I'm a 22 year old male currently living in Norfolk Virginia, Over the past year or so I've gotten quite tired of living in the States, I'm tired of the cold weather and the rude people. I'm a simple guy, not much in the way of education (yet), I dont have any bad habits (drinking, drugs, greed, ambition) i just want to work and live and enjoy the company of good people. And I'd really like it to be within some good scenery, But theres a lot of information i need and i dont really know where to go to get it. Do I need a passport? What is the employment situation? where could I live? what kind of transportation would i need? how much money would i need to get on my feet? whats the crime rate like?
I don't have any desire to be someone special. And I dont mind being poor (I already am really). I just have my sketchbook and my guitar and my dog Jake. I dont have anything holding me down here like kids or a wife. And there isnt anything forcing me to go. Would I even fit in?

Hello,

Relocating to the Virgin Islands is a big move. However if you have no attachments in the mainland then I suppose give it a shot.

A passport to move to the USVI: Well if you are not an American, then you need more than a passport. If you are an American no you don't need a passport - you can use birth certificate and governement issued photo id.

Employment Situation: Depends on the island you choose to move to. St. John will more likely be the most difficult to find housing and employment as it is a smaller island. Most of the emplyment there will be in the sales/tourism trade. On St. Thomas and St. Croix as well will be tourism - sales, restaurants, hotel... There are also jobs in private sector - law offices, doctor offices ect as well - however these types of jobs usally require some networking. Tourist trade jobs are fairly 'easy' to find because there are many places to apply for employment.

Live/Housing: You would have to rent an apartment. Apartments are more difficult to find in St. John, on St. Thomas and St. Croix it is easier - there are more options. Rent can run anywhere from $500 for a small place to over $1200 for ocean view. Wide range and depends on what you want, furnished, view, location, number of rooms...

Transportation: Depends on where you are living. If you are close to your job - then you might be able to take the bus or local safari buses. If you want to get around you can buy an island car, ship your car from the states are buy a new car here.

Crime rate depends on island; much of the crime is related to illegal activities and domestic disputes.

A comment on being 'poor' - The Virgin Islands are not an inexpensive place to live. Rent, groceries, getting around - are not cheap.

If you are unsure whether you would fit in - perhaps you should visit for an extended stay to make sure moving is what you actually want.

Good Luck!!
