Good morning, we are looking for a Jeep wrangler for sale. we are not relocating till August. We are looking to spend $3000-$4000 but from what I've seen so far cars are very expressive. I understand jeeps are the island car but. $6000-10,000 for a car that's 20+years old seems high. If you know of anyone selling or going to sell I would appreciate any info.

Your right - cars down here can be very expressive, with rust colored accents and plenty of dents and scratches (sorry, couldn't resist).

Seriously though, the Wranglers have a bit of a premium so if you find one for under 4k you can just about bet it will require some work. Most of the time a regular car will do just fine and a Jeep or 4wd is not essential. Jeeps can be a real hassle, leaky tops, no security, bouncy ride, bad gas mileage (6cyl) etc. Despite that they are fun vehicles with a loyal following. Any good deals on a Jeep down here disappear pretty quick. Usually only come about when someone is desperate to leave island.

You could find a nice one where you are now and have it shipped down. Probably a better option if you really want a Jeep and don't want to pay the on-island premium price. Then if you decide to leave you will have no problem selling it (but likely for less than your cost + shipping).

Age has nothing to do with a car's value here...it's all about supply and demand...remember, these are islands and all vehicles have to be shipped here, so you can tack on 2 or 3 grand to it's price just for that...when you get here and start looking seriously, don't even pay attention to the year of the vehicle...just it's mileage and condition....what's worth $5,000 to you when you get here will be worth more after a coupla years of being here...what I mean is, YOUR perception of value changes. When I got here, I had just left a job as Asst. Sales Manager at a new/used car dealership in MI...a car I looked at, she was asking $1,600 for it (this was back in Jan of '98) and I wouldn't have valued it at $100 as the appraiser for our dealership....I negotiated it down to $1,200 and drove it for a year and a half...knowing what I know now, over 13 years later, yep, it was well worth the $1,600 she was asking back then...

You don't need a Jeep at all on Stx, but you do not want a car/suv that is low to the ground. We have horrible potholes that just keep growing and we seem to be flooding a lot this past year.

Thanks for all the great info. I have some knowledge of the island. my parents have lived there now for almost 4 years. So I'm thankful for that. I'm not so worried about year of the car just had sticker shock as I did at plaza.. Honestly we will have to get 2 cars and being the "Dallas- ite" just wanted a cool car.. Lol but really anything will do when it comes down to it. So if you are selling a car we are interested in taking a look and if you have a (good jeep well that's even better):-)
