I've been reading the previous topics and answers and have found the given information very help.

My question may seem mundane, but I am considering packing up and starting all over in the VI. Are there any suggestions as to which island is more suitable for starting out fresh as a 21 year old? I'm looking to pick up a job once I get there and find accomodations in the same manner. Sound like an okay idea and are there any tips you would be willing to offer?

Thanks!

Meredith

Meredith,
Get the Settler's Handbook. Read it cover to cover. Also look in the older posts on this board and a lot of your questions will be answered. If after doing that you have more questions, by all means, bring 'em on.

I think STJ is a cool island to start out on.
If you can find a good job, you will meet a lot of people and havea great time.

Hi Folks,

The Settlers Handbook is a great resource for folks considering moving permanently, temporarily or for retirement - to the USVI. You can order it on-line at

http://www.vitraders.com

it is on the home page at that link!

What type of work are you looking into?? You will need to save money to live off of for 1-2 months at least till you get on your feet. Might stay in a small b&b while you really get around and find an apartment.

Hi Meridith and Kerin,
My boyfriend and I are trying to relocate down to St Thomas as well (both of us in our 20s)....What we have figured out so far, is that the Villa Fairview is a great place to start out at (while looking for a place)...it is $600/month, requires no lease, just a one month commitment.
You can find more info at villafairview.com.....I think my boyfriend and I are going to do that until we find a place. Also, Reliable Realty has some nice, affordable condos...their # is (304) 774-1181. Good luck and let me know if you find any tips for us!

I wouldnt go unless you are either independently wealthy, have made your money, or a trust funder.

I really admire the good advice you can get on this website regarding moves to the USVI. Many websites ignore the real possibility that you might move here.. However,{my favorite word} Young people from the "States" move here every year. Some of them find they have made a terrible mistake and bail out as soon as they can. However (that word again) others come and find a home. Some of those "young" people have been here for over 30-40 years. It is important that we recognize that we are all trying to find who we are and where we belong. Thanks to the vinow website and the people who are a part of it.

dont listen to aaron.

i say go for it. i made the move [at 22] down here, to st john, and havent regretted a day of it. yes, there are some more difficult days to deal with. many dont stay for too long. but even they leave with a lot more stories and memories than those who never tried.

4 years later, i'm still here, and have no intention of going anywhere =)

Aaron is missing a very important element in his/her list of things you need in order to move...

DESIRE...where there is a will there is a way!

You really don't need a ton of cash to move down here. The more you have, the more comfortable you will be. It might be tight at first, any move will do that with rental deposits and airfares and all that. Rent isn't unreasonable on STJ if you consider some people spend for one night as to what i spend for a months rent. Living in a capitalist system, money is always what moves and shakes things. Whether you live on St. John or Idaho, money will dictate how comfortable you are.
