Good evening, I plan on moving to the VI in about 2 years. I've noticed how expensive the housing is. I want to rent at least a 2 bedroom apartment. I am a Registered Nurse. The pay there is about $10 per/hr less than I make in Ohio. Would I have to have a full time and part time job for living expenses.

Absolutely, For Sure,Check out the 'traveling nurse option' !!!!!- they will pay a lot of your expenses - you will make way more than the regular staff and it will give you some months to decide if this is a place you want to live and work.

Good night Leigh,

A second on the traveling nurse option. They pay a big chunk of your costs for relocation and housing, plus a higher salary than you would be able to make as a regular RN. You will definitely want to experience working at one of our hospitals before you commit to moving here full time. It's not like the States, in more ways than I could possibly count.

Depending on what island you move to, a 2-bedroom apartment can cost $800 to $1500 per month minimum. Maybe more in two years if the economy picks up again and demand for housing increases.

Speaking as a former Ohioan who is married to a nurse here on Stx....

Depending on your specialty and experience, you can make some pretty good money. It may be 10-20% less than what you're getting paid now, but you won't pay State, County or City tax on your income here like you had to in Ohio, and you will get to spend your income in the Virgin Islands rather than in Ohio (!)

JFL Hospital will reimburse you (for free) upwards of $6500 for legitimate moving expenses, including travel, shipping, provided you work for at least 3 years.

Travel nurses are often treated poorly by the staff (for many reasons) so do that only if you have a thick skin.
