Relocating to St. John in 8 weeks!

Hi everyone! I'm relocating from Chicago to St. John (what is the abbreviation???) on December 26th. I did my PMV 2 weeks ago and have an apartment, but there were not many employers willing to interview me. Just checking to see if there are any suggestions on where to look for a job. I have done Connections, left resumes all over the island (I would be fine working on St. Thomas too - I'll be living near the ferry dock), and have applied online. The VI Daily news has some things, but not too many. I would appreciate any suggestions!

I have a B.A. degree, 16 years financial and wellness management experience. I'd be happy waitressing! I'm a personal trainer, boxing coach, and massage therapist. I also had 14 years in banking. Jill of all Trades! I'm not trying to toot my own horn, just trying to get some help! Also, I don't know a single sole on the island - and would love the chance to meet new people and make friends.

35, happy female, from the windy city.

Thanks!

When you get to STJ, start hitting the bars and restaurants. You'll find some kind of work fairly soon. After you are working, then start to network to find the job you want. I know it sounds scary, but you probably will not find a job until you are actually living on-island.

Good luck.

There are outlets for your many skills... personal training, try Gym in Paradise on the third floor of the Marketplace. Massage therapist, try the resorts (Westin, Caneel). As for banks, we have Scotia and FirstBank (not sure if they are hiring anyone though). Also, I don't know if you have experience in this field, but in my opinion we could use a good accountant (the one I use just dropped all of her individual clients to focus on her business clients, so I imagine there are quite a few people seeking a good accountant right about now). Like Linda said, once you are living here, get out and introduce yourself. In my opinion, you are more likely to find jobs through word of mouth. That is how I found the two jobs I've had here on St. John (both "professional" jobs). I've lived here for more than a year and this board was an immense help to me, so I like to try to return the favor whenever I get the chance. If you have any more specific questions, don't hesitate to ask, and good luck with your move!

Thanks all! Everyone is so helpful and kind. I'm really looking foward to being there. See you in 8 weeks! I'll try not too worry too much and leave my big city troubles behind.

Happy Halloween all!

p.s. I'm not a CPA, but have done private bookkeeping for years. I'd be happy to be of service ( I do everything but the tax filing) I'm one of those strange people that actually ENJOYS crunching numbers!

Thanks again to everyone for their advice. I have another question. What is a health card and how do I obtain one? Is this something I should get before I leave Chicago?
thank you!

As far as I know, you have to get the health card here in the VI. A health card is required for anyone working around food. Sorry I can't be of more help, I haven't worked in a field that required a health card here. If you do a search on this site, I know health cards have been discussed at length, so you should find all the info you need there. Good luck!
