Hello everyone-

I'm thinking about relocating to St. Croix as a teacher. Before I accept the positon if it's offered I have some questions I hope can be answered. As for finding an apartment where would I start from via the internet? What is the social scene like on the island? I'm single and in my mid 30's. I don't want to be moving from one sleepy, family bedroom town to another. Also, would it be wise to ship my car and if so does anyone know of any cargo companies???

Thanks for all the help!

have you ever been to STX? If not, you need to visit before you decide. This is a huge undertaking. In many ways STX is a sleepy little town. I don't know anything about the single scene.

As far as renting before you come. If you take the job, perhaps someone at the school can give you some leads.

I moved to St. Croix on June 3. There are more than enough nice apartments for rent at decent prices. You could stay a week at the Danish Manor Hotel in C-sted for $200 while you look for a place. 340.773.1377 800.524.2069. There are plenty of neighborhood bars and bars at restaurants and resorts to hang out at. As for the car, shipping is pricey but probably worth it if it runs well. I shipped a 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup truck (runs like a top, has never broken down, probably a few more years' life) for $960 through Crowley on a barge out of Ft. Lauderdale, then paid $560 in road tax (unfortunately, tax recently went from 6 cents to 11 cents per pound of vehicle). I know it sounds pricey, but if you sell your car on the mainland and then buy one here, you'll end up paying for these things anyway. Foreign made cars pay an additional tax. Good luck!

I am a single professional female in my 30s. There is no social scene on STX for people who fall into this demographic. This is not to say I don't have friends, but it is very difficult to meet single people who are not just out of college and riding the tropical service industry circuit.

It's an interesting place to live, but you REALLY NEED TO VISIT before making a decision to move.

Just my two cents.
